A brief history. Just before my last run there was a bad storm. I shut down my PC but somehow a lightening strike still fried my 56k modem.
After I got home I bought a brand new USR 56k V92 winmodem.
The modem seems to work except whenever I install the drivers meant for this modem.
If I use the winXP drivers (I assume generic modem ones) the modem functions but at a reduced 28.8. Needless to say, the connection is even slower than the norm.
If I use the drivers that came with the disk, the modem fails to initialize. No dial tone. Nothing. The diagnostic query however says 100% functional.
I downloaded the most recent drivers straight from USR. They also locked the modem up tight.
My question: Since its been ages and I really cannot remember, how/where can I get some drivers to boost the modem up to its 56k capacity? 28.8 just isn't gonna work.
Any other incites would be welcome.
[EDIT]
I found an initialization string that makes it think its connecting at 115k. I know this is wrong because its still slow as hell so I assume its a false report. I need drivers. I assume I do anyway.

Great Excuse to upgrade to Cable or Dsl
But if you must remember that when you set it at 115k since its not possible to connect to that speed it might default to 28k
but seriously a dialup modem being slow?
Why Do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties

Perhaps it's your internet properties? I haven't dealt with DialUp or modem of that sort for years, and I didn't get too much experience with it back then either. But try checking your browser setting and any internet properties.

If you were able to get 56k before your modem fried, on the same telephone line you are using now, I don't think its the telephone line holding you back.
Maybe it could be the modem you bought. I am not familiar with which modem brands are crappy, but maybe you bought the bad type of modem.
