This map is set in Iraq, in the old quarter of a sprawling city. It uses ideas from a number of the popular maps: cs_italy, (the apartment route) cs_militia (the tunnel route), de_inferno (gamble on which route the T's have taken and try to recover from mistakes), and it's largely based upon de_dust's traffic pattern (rush to center conflict area, and an underground tunnel), but with extensive additions.

I wanted a vehicle for my economic, social and political commentary, and a map rich enough in play value to hold their attention for a long time. Experienced players will be able to play this, and invest in getting good at the map with little effort. Newbs can take a cautious approach and still survive if they're careful.

The map is very fun to play. It is a large space, and that tends to make the game something other than a twitch festival. You have to do some thinking, or estimating of your opponents. Careful feinting will allow you to dominate your opponents. There are too many routes to cover cheaply, but many shortcuts to recover from bad guesses. The strategy uses a half-circle pattern with each route taking longer. Shortest is direct to the temple. The longest route is a hail-mary through the sewers that comes up behind the church at bombsite B, that forces the CT's to either waste a man and camp the position, or rush back to the area once they don't find the bomb - a weak T-team can regain the initiative by working together ratther than by just having better reflexes.

The apartments are a high-conflict area for grenades and close combat, but whomever holds the apartments has an advantage covering the routes to the temple bomb site. The bridge and the alley effectively turn the map into a figure-8, and opponents can come from just about everywhere at once. Smoke makes it worse and bodies end up everywhere. The Church is an attempt to recreate the B-site from de_mansion, with multiple exits and multiple levels and is very difficult to either take or secure. The strategy is to rush the temple, the A-site, listening for the T's on the way, then returning to the spawn, which is the B-site before the T's can hold the church. Extricating T's who are spawn camping is one of th best parts of the map. There is a single ak47 in a crate in the sewers in the dark, to make the first round or two a little more interesting. The sewer system runs the length of the map, is the longest route, and gives access to the underground ramp, teh top of the ramp, and the rear of the church, making it a close quarters battle area that Newbs will probably enjoy.

I have spent countless hours playing it. Timing routes. Editing bot navigation. Tuning it. It's a good map. You have to decide if it's a great map. But I think I succeeded. It PLAYS well. With bots. With others. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks

That's what happens when you don't use enough smilies on the internet  Anyway, back the map...

I think it would be a good idea to lock this thread.

Anyways... Due to a virus on my computer that won't allow my computer to start up normally, I can't do a review of this map, or really do anything for awhile during the time that by dad tries to fix my computer.

I returned an insult in response to insulting sarcasm, perhaps it was too subtle or complex, and the meaning lost or missed. But bad manners need repercussions. It's just one's moral duty to society. There is far too much talk here about incompetence elsewhere, when those other realms have both competence and civility. Arrogance is a useful trait at times. It is not always unwarranted. But my cast at arrogance is merely the presentation of a mirror. And a justified one, I think.

Your displacement surfaces look prety sharp and unrealistic, try
smoothing them off a bit. Also, is it just me or have you overscaled
some of the textures? The standard texture scale should be 0.25 for
most things, with the occasional scaling up to reduce repetition over
large surfaces such as big ground areas or rock faces.

And yes, I know better. I designed the information architecture either in whole or in part, of three of the top ten web sites in the world, and dozens in the second tier.

Er, right, you being an executive and world-wide-internet-guru explains why you're wasting your time on my piss-poor website, and why you failed to notice that at the end of the day this is built around a hobby whose only link with money goes so far as the yearly hosting bill- maps are not a market. And why your website has a ridiculously long list on the right of books, that no-one in their right mind would read in that format. If you people paid me to do this then I'd quit, form a dedicated team and show you real information architecture...

Feel free to give me some helpful criticism though, rather than saying this site should be more like an online magazine and have a whole editorial team working to ensure the masses have access to the hottest new maps. We offer tutorials and the ability to show off your level, and it would be nice to link the whole process together, but without the manpower to organise it all it's not really feasible.

And you want to know why there's "no traffic" in here? It's because most people, like yourself, just turn up and expect fawning praise, without helping other people with their maps. Without a link built into the SDK directing people here, the volume of passers-by simply isn't enough to ensure that there is a large, core group of selfless/map hungry individuals. VERC is only more helpful for that one reason. Why not go help out with the other CS maps here, such as cs_assault_sg, instead of complaining that the community isn't dying to help you out?

On the one hand, I am astounded with your arrogance (and nonsense about 'cannons'), but on the other a bit miffed at the unhelpfulness so far shown in this post. But without charging people $10/year for memberships, that's what you should expect.
As for your map- I, like many others here, don't play CS, though from the screenshots it looks decent, though nothing new or amazing. Nice skybox!

Errrr...

We arent looking to alienate people by slapping their maps down with
sarcastic attacks, we try and help people by giving them constructive
advice. And we certainly aren't trying to attain a "control" over the
market.

The site is primarily for HL/HL2 and not its mods, which probably
(along with the original size of the screenshots) explains the lack of
feedback.

WTF was all that about cannons, too? Your complaints arent very clear
at all because you've waffled, and all that reference to "cannons" has
gone over my head. You'll have to explain what one is, as I always
thought of a cannon as being a large gun powered by an explosive
charge..

I'll have a look if youre going to whinge so much, but dont expect
feedback if you spit in the face of a community that isnt focused on CS
at all, but is willing in the past and present to help such mappers.

Edit - BTW, creating some kind of lexical set to go with your apparent
arrogant and self assured attitudes toward intelligence is actually
making you look incredibly stupid.

As I suspected, you must mean "canon" - and it isn't pluralised
with double N. Buy a new dictionary, or take the advice - "don't use a
million dollar word when a 5 cents one will suffice".

Yeah I know Congratulations please drop it know. I'm very ashamed of that post, it was not one of the highlights of my usage of these forums. I also scanned your tutorial of screenshots, but it doesn't say which button takes them (I know it's an F<something>) and I'll just browse for awhile to find out where they go.
