Gluon is the scientific name and Egon is the slang around black mesa.

Gauss was a scientist who did a lot of work with magnets and electrostatic charges, Tau is a greek letter, in keeping with the naming scheme of many things Black Mesa such as Lambda Complex. A Tau Lepton is also a subatomic particle, but i doubt that this gun has anything to do with it.

Embarrassingly, I could have occasionally called the "Gauss" "Egon", although I think you're correct with it being an alternate name for "Gluon". I'm pretty sure "Tau" and "Gauss" are used for the same gun, though. But... who am I? Who the hell am I?

Good question! I've never known why.. isn't the gauss also called the Tau cannon? O_O. I use Gluon/Gauss myself.
