Very nice vash character, but somehow I don't find the map very representative of the series

Dammit, I wish I had the time to help, I have quite a bit of experience with RM2k(3). But then, I'm learning OpenGL right now so...

Since I've always attempted to make 'pretty' RPG Maker scenarios and of course, failed miserably, I've grown to dislike it.

Well, you could try a different approach to the game, don't use the main story, but use the world. Don't use the main characters for party members. Write up a story that coincides with the main story and have certain events in the story happen, but they also have an effect on your story as well. And definitely practice on making maps, and not using the RTP. There's s**tloads of other resources to use. If you need some examples, just start dling other games there at Skytowergames. Or you could visit my guild site and download the demo of my RPG. The first few maps aren't that great, but they get much better as you progress further. I meant to go back and redo them, but again time... You can find it in the Projects section.

I really wanted to use RM2k3 but I thought it had been taken off the internet now. The only thing I could get my hands on were the RTP2000 resources. Is it still available?
