I apologise if somewhere on this site there is actually an answer to the question that I'm asking here, so forgive me, but I just cannot find a single basic and understandable explanation for how to do this.
All I want is a simple step-by-step guide on how to make an NPC voice a line. As well as exactly how to find out the names of each sound file; because I've looked in all of my HL2 folders and I can't even find anything called 'sentence.txt'.
I just want a straighforward answer, not much of the stuff i've read makes much sense - what with people trailing off into conversation and such like (not that i care, but in the case of trying to understand this stuff its a nuisance! )
If there is already a post on this answering exactly what im asking then just redirect me there or whatever.
Cheers!
...and he saw that it was GOOOOOD!

If you are attempting to get an NPC to to voice a line with lip synching you need to place a logic choreeographed scene entity in the map, you then tie this entity to the NPC you want to speak (by putting it's name in a target field) And selecting a scene file will play that audio. If you want to make your own then you will have to use faceposer to lip synch the audio and save it as a scene file. Hope this helps. BTW if you are looking for a list of scenes i can't help but please let me know if you find a link with them
