That's basically the error I've been getting in my new map. If it's not
word for word it's pretty close. The map loads fine, and as my spawn
point is set up I'm initially facing a wall. The message doesn't appear
in the top left until I turn around and look at the main area, where
faces clip out of view randomly.

This is probably self explanatory in that as it suggests I have too
many brushes textured the same.. which makes sense, as it seems the
faces that clip out only do so when there are a good 30 of them already
in view.

The problem is, it doesn't seem reasonable. I have a series of vertical
supports that use a texture that isn't used anywhere else - there's
only about 9 of these things that are made up of 3 block brushes each.
And some of those faces clip out of view.

I'm going to try adding more materials to the map so this error goes away but if anyone has any comments I'd appreciate it.

It's disappointing because HL2 comes with a severely lacking library of textures. It's like they decided that the entire game of Half Life 2 would feature crumbly, old dilapidated buildings and there was no room for any other style.

So, when I try to create a map for Counter-Strike which doesn't look
like a decrepit rusty shack I am limited to the 20 textures that
Valve's artists created that don't look like trash, to fill my 500,000
sq foot indoor map.

f**k.

Also, here's my compile log for the map in question:

Any help appreciated.

According to your log, you have a leak:

**** leaked ****
Entity infodecal (64.22 -824.00 108.60) leaked!

If you fix it, your problems should go away. Look here for more information - http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Leak

Actually, I wonder if it's an unrelated problem now. There are a lot of
FindPortalSide errors in my compile log, but when I go to the named
co-ordinates of the errors it seems to center my 2D views (at least one
of them) outside my map entirely.

I'm lost.

All the FindPortalSide errors are from the leak. The program doesn't actually know where the leak is, the coordinates provided are just a starting point on where to look. Check the link I provided and read up on the subject, it's fairly easy to remedy and you're going to be getting A LOT of leaks in the future, so find out how to solve them now.

I got the leaks fixed up, there were two of them. One wasn't even a full unit in diameter!

Much thanks Campaignjunkie.
