I tested the map:

This looks great, the sky really fits and that tower is amazing.

You were talking about "glitches & errors" in your previous post, but the only glitch I really found annoying was this one:

When you're on this side of this rock, the black outline is invisible.

But when you're on the other side, the outline becomes visible ... because it's such a big rock, this catched my eye. Maybe you should use something different to create a "cel-shaded" effect on those rocks, because I haven't really noticed this kind of error on smaller objects.

But my overall impression from the map:

Looks great, feels great ... something really fresh and never seen before. Keep up the excellent work !

P.S: And about those r_speeds ... maybe you should get them down a little, but I think high r_speeds are worth it.

Surely there are places where you could texture on the cel-shade dealies... IE the tower/helicopter pad, perhaps on those light pillars, on the big wall, etc.

dont forget that the farther away you are from something the harder it is to tell the detail. So for things out of reach from a normal game, you could use methods to think its cell shaded, butnot. So like cassius said, on things totally farther away from the player you could try to do a textured cell shade method.

Updated. Peaks at around 1000 wpoly. Changed some textures around, added more cel-shading to the cliffs. Fixed problem Forceflow pointed out.

Very nicely done. I think the cell-shade effect has been fleshed out wonderfully so far.

And I'm talking about version 5. (Change the hyphen between cell and shade to an underscore)

I don't think the rocks need to be changed at all.
However, I do think that the disappearing black line on most of the rocks benefits the map, simply because that's what cell-shading is. It just leaves a black outline, and usually choppy animation, but that?s something else entirely.

I'll might just release the map source instead of writing a full tutorial about it... Seems easier and more effective. But I don't know; I'm still trying to make this into an actual, playable map, in which case I might be more hesitant about releasing it.

Brief explanation:
It's essentially a triangular prism oriented vertically (looks like a triangle from top-down view). Then you skew it to fit the profile of the rock, and vertex manipulate the brush to control how viewable it is from different areas of the map. That's probably the most flexible way to cel-shade anything - much more versatile than that box method I expanded on in the tutorial. But the box method is still good for understanding how the effect works, and is easier.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense... :sailor:

Actually, that makes perfect sense. That also seems less tedious then duplicating everything, but probably isn't in most cases.
I'll have to try it out.

'm having a few problems loading your map CJ, I put it in C:\sierra\half-life\valve\maps but it doesn't appear in my map list, bu if I go to the console and type "map cel_shade_more5" then it starts to load it but exits half life right at the last moment. Any thoughts?

EDIT: got it workin now, silly me I hadn't downloaded the .tga's

Anyway, the r_speeds went through the roof on my pc, but its a good map, maybe a bit small but the helipad was a nice addition:

Could you put a texture with a black outline on that concrete floor in this picture? The contrast between other objects is outlined in black, I think this change from sand->concrete could benefit as well.

EDIT: Actually, look at the fourth picture in your first post to really see what I mean.

Lol you don't happen to have coded ev0l hack programs that make the map download on its own did you? I didn't click any downloads and suddenly a zip file opened up with your map, no download progress thing or anything!

Strange, wasn't gunna download till its done but now I have it anyway!
