Well I've placed one in a large enough of a room (More than enough)... It pops up, taps the walls and walkway going around the room (Usually 180 degrees opposite the player), and sometimes just jitters around like an idiot. It doesn't chase sounds or grenades at all and never gets aggressive to anything.

I tried placing info node's around the tentacle in its pit, as well as on the walkways the player walks around. This did nothing, niether did making them air nodes.

Searching google or any of the big sites really doesn't help at all with monsters like tentacles.

Any help?

How is the layout of your room?
Maybe the tentacles only work in rooms with a circle type of layout like they did in Half-Life, since I think they only got used once, they might have just not bothered coding it for a wide range of usages.

They also appear later on in surface tension just popping out of flat sand, and in xen popping out of different skanky pools...

But nonetheless, it is a circular room with a radius of about 648 units. I've tried with it closer to one side as well as in the exact centre with no effect.

The walkways are about 632 units above the pit that the tentacle is in (Which I've also tried adjusting +-256 units), and they themselves stick out 96 units from the wall. The tentacle will tap the ceiling much further above it, and it'll tap just a few units above the walkway (Although on the opposite side of the room to the player, and never aggressively). It will not try to come down and attack you at the bottom of the pit either.
