I have made a simple CS:S map but it wont compile. i have not put any
lights in it yet and the only entietts are
info_player_counterterrorist/terrorist and a few func_door_rotating and
a env_bubble

this is the compile log but oi cant make heads or tils of it

Delete the non-quad displacement or make it into a quad then your problem should go away.. :smile:

OK first, i dunno if nooba is correct or not, but i do not think so cause the compile continued.

second, if you do not place lights of some kind, the map may fail, it used to in HL1.

put in some lights, do what nooba said and get back to us.

i prefer that you do one thing at a time so we know which fixed it.

Ok i couldnt find a non quad displacemnt so i did select all and
destroy. It runs now but the compile log is filled with stuff i dont
recognise

As a simple solution to find the offending displacment surface, just copy your map, open the copy, and begin progressivly deleting displacements and recompiling with just the BSP on. Keep doing this until you compile without issues. The additional crap you see is probably due to the non-rendered lightning and such.

Delete like three at a time, and you can go through the surfaces quite fast. Then undo your deleted items one by one until your recompile errors. Tadda! You found your offending displacement.

I just had to hunt down one, and it turns out that if you use the vertex editor to create a sloped surface prior to creating the displacement surface, and if a perpendicular surface is cut into a triangle by your sloped surface, the compiler will error with a non-quad error.

MORAL: Never create a displacement surface which is connected at opposing corners. This will cause the compiler to think you are cutting the displacement surface into a triangle. Try off-seting the corners of the brush which is being cut.
