I've seen this done in many maps, but I can't figure out how to do it myself! Will someone help me?

First, you need a custom sky. The skys are made up of 6 tga files and 6 bmp files. Have a look in half-life/gfx/env folder and you will see all the skys. You will notice that on the end of the name, you will see two extra letters. This is so that half-life knows which sky is the top, which sky is the left and so on....

To add your custom sky to your map, in hammer click on map properties and where it says cl_skyname add the name of your selected sky, but don't add the lt or up, that sort of stuff.

If you're creating your own sky, each image must be 256x256.

It might also help you if you knew these:

lt is left
rt is right
up is up
bk is back
ft is front
dn is down

I highly recommend Wadfather ( http://wadfather.planethalflife.gamespy.com/new/ ) for looking for custom skies.

You can also go all the way and create a fully custom sky in a free little program called "Terragen". I've been using this tutorial (for Source/HL2) a lot, it's quite helpful:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Skybox_%282D%29_with_Terragen

You only need 256x256 maps for HL1, though and you have to convert the the pictures into a WAD file (I always used Wally for WADs).
Why snark works.

Though a good program, this is not necessary for skies. Skies need to be saved as six .tga files as aaron described.

How embarrassing, I totally forgot. It's been too long.

I should have read aaron's post more carefully, too.
