I'm not sure about the cache file but to compile a map without playing is pretty simple. When you go to Run Map in Hammer, just check "Do no run game after compiling" option right about the Additional Game Parameters box.

Broken Cache file? You may have to download the broken cache file and redownload it (run the game and it should automatically download it) or delete and reinstall the whole game.

In steam: Go to the game that is giving you trouble. Right click properties. Move the tab over to local files. And the third button down there should be something called "Verify integrity of game cache". This process will take a while, and steam may ask you to run disk clean up and/or disk derangement. Simple solution because no one reads blocky text:

Right Click Half Life 2 -> Properties -> Local Files Tab -> Verify Integrity Of Game Cache
Then
Start -> Run -> "dfrg.msc" without the quotes -> Run this utility till its done.

BTW this belongs in the Half Life 2 Editing board.

What that is is called BBCode, you can use BBCode in forum posts to certain things, such as posting images. If you have a look at this code, you can see the opening image tag, followed by the image url, with a closing image tag signified by a forward slash.
