Alrighty, question is straight-forward, but I'm assuming the answer won't be. I'm confused here:

I have an available PCI 2.2 slot on my motherboard. This PCI 2.2 slot supports PCIe 2.0/1.0 architecture (so says the box). Does that mean this slot can support some PCIe cards?

Namely, (and what I really want to know) will this slot support this card:

Yes.

All PCI-Express revisions are backwards compatible, so don't worry about the version numbers.

A 16x PCI-Express slot is just 16 PCI-E 1x lanes sellotaped together, and you can stick a 1x or 4x card in one no problem.

Obviously you'll probably have some 1x or 4x slots spare anyway to use for that.

Btw, if this is a new purchase I strongly recommend you take a look at the Xonar D2X or DX which are superior to Creative solutions on Vista or 7 (and don't require fking about with ALchemy to get things to work).

The Auzentech XiFi prelude is also a far better quality XiFi implementation than anything Creative ever made... although anything with "OMG FATALALI!11TY!!!" written on it gets bonus lol points too.

yes I'd urge you to ignore Creative if you can. Ive never had anything but problems with their stuff especially drivers.

Not many gamers see these but I did own two in one machine before my recent build ( now they're separate )

I can't say enough about how reliable they are. Mine are 4 years old and never a hiccup. The drivers are probably the most solid written for any device, not to mention the super-simple control panel that beats the shit out of anything Creative can come up with. You can have multiple cards that show up as one device for a total of 8 inputs and 8 outputs as well if that's your thing.

Ah, well this is news to me! Thanks for the answer guys!

As for the sound card itself, it also never occured to me that Creative was so overrated. Yes, I realized when they included the 'Fatal1ty sig with the card I knew this was a big marketing ploy. But I've always used Creative cards in my systems and found my last one of 6 years finally go out on me yesterday. (Funny story with that I can divulge later). It was (what I think) Creative's first card in their XFi series, and has all the features a lot of their cards do today (not to mention I shelled out the money for it then too!). It ran my 6.1 surround sound flawlessly.

But I digress, I have no problem looking into that Asus card you make mention of larchy; It's lunch break at work, and I can't be seen looking over these tech sites too often :p I'll check it out when I get off!

@ haymaker: why would you want two sound cards? All I can imaging is using one to control one set of speakers or headphones and another for just speakers?

[EDIT]: I just re-read your post haymaker. The drivers allow you to pair up cards ala SLI Crossfire type technology (except without the bridge) to get double the processing power?

Depends what you want them for. M-Audio are excellent, but that card is a professional one and is not going to be a good solution for gaming or general use. It is also around 7 years old - ie I doubt it likes OpenAL very much.

M-Audio had gaming/general use cards based on the same Oxygen chip as the ASUS cards, but the ASUS cards came out later and blew them (and Auzentech's Oxygen card) away prettymuch.

The Xonar STX is the current market leader for audiophile music listeners, surpassing the quality of the XiFi prelude and D2X.

The D2 is an all-round sort of model, and the DX is the good value option that is great for games and general use if you're not an audiophile with $$$$ speaker setups.
