I have a small problem, basically, I am trying to properly align the pipe-texture on the texture to these pipes.

But hammer is not understanding my instructions as a consequence of 'fitting' the texture to the shape, and is spraying on the texture at queer angles and curves instead of applying it uniformly straight.

I am confused as to how I am supposed to make this texture fit properly, I am aware that I can do this manually but considering the nature of the shape, I do not think it would be the wisest choice.

Would there be a clever way to somehow properly fit this texture on to the pipes? So far my attempts have been unsuccessful.

Thanks in advanced.

(The pun above was honestly unintended)

When you apply the texture to the curve, be sure to hold alt. Doing this makes the face you are applying the texture to inherit more properties from the source.

I didn't see any pun. :|

I see, I never knew that; although unfortunately that doesn't help me with this problem so well.

Good.

Using alt-clicking to wrap the texture smoothly around corners is the best thing you can do. You will still get visible borders since the only way to align the texture for the lower edges would be proper UV texture-mapping, which Hammer doesn't support. Then there is lighting... even if you use proper smoothing groups there will likely stay sharp shadows between some polygons.

It's no coincidence that details like this pipe are done as prop models in Source. It's the only way to get them smooth.

while you're at it alt+r click the wall all the way around the curve as well, you will see an improvement

I have tried using these hotkeys but they do not seem to do anything, so far I have aligned the texture manually but it doesn't look as beautiful as it could.

maybe you are doing the alt+rightclick thing a lil wrong, the correct and tedious way is to use the previous plane as a reference for the next one.

ie:
  • select the wall by L click
  • alt+r click the first curve section to continue the lightmap grid from the wall
  • L click on that curve section you just did to select it
  • alt+r click the next curve section
  • select THAT one and alt+r click the next, and so on.
It will turn out a little smoother than that shot you have there.

Nice atmosphere btw.

Ahh, yes I see now.

The pipe is now virtually perfect.
