I know that no one really maps for goldsrc anymore, but I absolutely love goldsrc. I am a average mapper, not so great but not so bad either. I really need a tutorial on how to make good terrain/caves! I've done my fair share of googling for tutorials but there aren't any left really. Can someone help me out? :uncertain:

I'm not a gldsrc mapper, and have only ever played with it years ago, so I couldn't give ya any experienced advice, but taking a stroll through our list of half-life related articles, I found three that might just help you out. While they're not cave related specifically, they're techniques I'm sure, wouldn't be too far away from being re-purposed to do exactly that. So, check em out, I think if you followed all three of them (they're a set), you might be on your way to designing some awesomely detailed caves :hee:

I've actually been experimenting with a few different types of caves for a map and have found that triangle terrain, though very good looking, is not the best choice for a large scale cave system. (mostly cause it just takes so stinking long to make) It also is very hard to keep the player from getting stuck on a triangle terrain floor.

Before I rant on any more though, I would like to know, are the cave(s) you are making supposed to look man made or natural?
(man made meaning dug-out/tunneled)
Now remember kids. Asking questions is a good way to get censored by the government.

Yeah, triangle terrain is nice, but makes allot of clip errors and clip nodes (they can be removed by painting all the invisible sides of the triangles with the bevel texture).
I have been making tests with a cube cliped in triangle pyramids. This allowed me to manipulate the cube as much as I want, without making invalid shapes. But sometimes a part of one of the pyramids becomes visible after the manipulating is finished.
But you should make some tests with it on your own, to see what is it able to do. It's really handy for corners in the caves.
