Why not? I mean it they did get pretty far, I think I heard somewhere Barack Obama signed ACTA, but its just a treaty and he said that just because he signed it doesn't mean he still has to do everything it says. Not sure on that though, I heard it somewhere, but if thats true couldn't that be just the first step towards the full SOPA which is actual law?

I haven't been keeping up with this stuff but I assume its the online content stuff.

First of all, to my knowledge, steam proved that they can prevent theft. If they can do it, everyone can. So, there is no reason for ANYONE to monitor online theft other than the people creating the programs.

If they do not want to bother, then they deserve whatever happens.

As far as copy protected stuff like music and video.
The only reason anyone is crying is because its to easy to copy now.
In the days of tape recordings, no one bothered. NO ONE CARED.

If they try to enforce copy protection of these two things, then everyone in the world with a TIVO, or a DVR will be in jail.

That's ... entirely not true. Music, Software, Movie, and various other companies have always been affluently paranoid about piracy.

When the VCR was introduced ... lawsuits came out to try to stop it's sale as a "piracy device"

So, don't get thinking that, "oh they never bothered before, they won't now", because that's entirely not true.

I think the general language they're putting into these bills is very dangerous. The largest danger is, of course, encroaching on fair use. Something content holders have been trying to abolish for decades. These bills ... in all their forms, give far too much power purely by ACCUSING someone of infringement.

The worst part is, yes SOPA has been shelved, for the most part ... but that same line of thinking is there and it will continue to be there.

As for it passing, it's absolutely a possibility, not only are congress members entirely ignorant of how these things work ... they've okayed far more perilous things that result in people's deaths ... protecting people's right to free speech and fair use is not high on their todo list ... not unless it's an election year.

True enough. I remember the initial hoodoo.
But the fact remains, its not so much the copying as the ease of distribution that most are concerned with now.

I dunno what the solution is, or will be but one thing I am certain of, there are MUCH more important things going on right now than this. I hope the governments pull their collective heads out of their back sides and realize this SOON.

The solution is people need to change their view on how content ownership works. Primarily the content creators.

SOPA has been passed a couple of days ago here, in Ireland despite the 80,000 (5% of Ireland's population) petitions signed. Not really sure what to expect to happen now, are companys in Ireland going to be able to take more action against piracy and be able to cencor more stuff? or does this mean we could be cut off our internet any minute, I don't really understand, can someone explain it to me before I'm cut off snarkpit? :P

Probably not, I don't know of anyone else here from Ireland. And the Ireland SOPA bill wouldn't be the same as the proposed USA SOPA bill. American legislation doesn't transcend international boundaries.
