Also, a software solution is perfectly acceptable as long as its legit. I have no interest in putting questionable software in my new phone.

It's 100% different for every device, you're going to have to look it up online. (How to root [phone manufacturer and model])
And also, be careful. If you brick the phone, they will not replace it for free, and warranty will not apply.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Now you would think that this is an obvious question, but its not. Are there differences in USB cables? I wanna know if one of mine is broken, or just a different model.
With my new phone I have the option of tethering it and using the internet connection for my laptop. THIS IS NOT A MOBILE HOTSPOT but a tethering.
The USB that cam with the phone lets me do it all by itself. No problems. Another USB I have in my truck won't do it at all. It connects. It charges. For all intents its working but it fails to tether.
Ok the reason I ask. My wifes phone tethers too but her USB wont let it. I wanna know if there are different USB cables so I can tether hers to the net so she can use it while I am gone.

It's likely a proprietary cable and the socket has extra pins that aren't part of whatever USB connection standard they're using.
