I am not saying that there aren't any issues, as I have just begun but if you go through steam itself and upgrade your Skyrim you can change the looks 100 fold in just a few minutes.
Load Steam in online mode, go to the workshop and click on the Skyrim tab.
From there you can either look through them all or by category.
I have so far only looked through the "landscape" tab. I have downloaded about 12 and the difference is amazing.
I just so happen to be in Raven Rock, and they had a town upgrade for Raven Rock.
I didn't even recognize the place and I was there but 30 minutes before.
I have been unable to ascertain if the mods clash yet if you have say 2 or 3 that deal with snow, or rocks. I dunno if they work in harmony or what.
I also noticed that one or two have to be turned on in the same place you turn on the mods for DragonBorn and HearthFire. Be sure to check there before you load.
Also remember, once you install a mod, you cannot take it out and use any save games where the mod was used. You have to go to one slightly older save game.

I have been working with this a bit but parts make no sense, yet it had to be done to make it work.
Over the course of the last two days, I downloaded 15 mods. Even though they downloaded, they didn't seem to install/activate.
So, this is what I did, and they now seem to be working.
[*]I looked in the file section where the mods are supposed to be. Nothing there except the 3 mods "dawnguard" "hearthfire" and "dragonborn"
[*]I load Skyrim and a saved game.
[*]I quit game and go back to the mod section. Still nothing there.
[*]I exit totally to desktop.
[*]I shut off steam.
[*]I restart steam and check the mod section. 1 by 1 they start just appearing till they're all there.
[*]
I dunno if any or all of these steps are necessary but it didn't load the mods till I did it.
[edit]
So far I have only noticed one odd shadow. It was long and skinny and seemed to follow an NPC around. I dunno if this was because of a mod or in the game originally since I never saw this NPC before that time.

Ok so I have to say you guys where right, Skyrim is pretty awesome. It really makes me kick myself for not buying a 3D monitor, I bet it would look amazing in 3D
I just started messing with the MODs on steam, haven't tried them out but I got several installed this evening.
This game is so detailed I can see it taking ages to make any significant progress. I was home today with a sore back and played for several hours. I managed to get to the peak with the grey beards I think they where called, the ones who show you how to shout. even with that progress I can see the game lasting a LONG time. I have the detailed texture DLC installed and the game looks amazingly detailed. After the grey beards I went to the near by island at the base of the mountain to find a missing woman from the village and thats where I left off. Its hard to shut it down, you get hooked.
I can't imagine many people having the time to read all of the books throughout skyrim, I'm too impatiant to read anymore than what appears to be quest relevant like npc journals and such. Also all the names you have to learn are at times lost on me, again through impatience i think, to really slow down and take everything in would take a tremendous amount of time.

Something that seems really mind boggling is that they can produce that amount of content in 3-4 years.

It would be nice to see a lockpicking mod, so far that is one area I have difficulty in, the picks just break too easy with the more advanced locks. I suppose modifying that might be considered mild cheating, as in increasing the lock pick tools life.

The line between mod and "cheat" is getting pretty thin. Considering validation that is done on some of these games now, I'm not really sure what's mod-able and not in terms of functionality anymore.
Even when playing Star Craft 2 you can't change certain things, because you're character is always online. They will ban the account for certain mods in single player.
It's getting pretty ridiculous.
It'd be nice if games still had a soft-online connection that was lenient or in favor of the user, as opposed to control over the user-base.

I found a lock picking mod that makes the lock picking process simple, its called lock pick pro. Theres a hand full of other mods I,ve started messing with also, such as ring of guile (or something like that), it makes you invisable but drops stamina along with other limitations. I'm trying not to use any cheats too powerful though, I'm concerned about ruining the gaming experience. I only like to run significant cheats after I've already beaten a game atleast once.

I agree ... I usually don't even apply graphics mods until I finish a game. It lets me see what the game itself had to offer originally.

I'm all over the graphics mods, anything to improve the experience and I'll give it a go.
I passed into the realm of cheaterville with a infinite shout ring, you instantly recharge. Its acttually pretty fun with some of the abilities. Instant stamina recharge also just for the fun of it. I don't do invincibility ever, I still get killed sometimes even with the mods. invincibility for anything other than some sort of debugging or rare use is lame, not sure what people find interesting about it.
