Well, I've been converting all of my editing tools to Steam today, and as such I've moved VHE over to the Steam directory. So I uninstalled it at the valve directory, and installed it over in Steam. I then uninstalled the valve directory. I knew that I had to reconfig everything, so I started changing the game configs and buld paths etc. with no problems.

However, with the textures, some of the wads simply refused to be loaded into VHE's browser. The suspects were halflife.wad, ns_eclipse.wad and ns_tanith.wad. The rest seemed to go fine. Now, I needed these wads for my map, so I took the liberty of re-installing VHE. Same problem.

So, this time, I uninstalled VHE, restarted, then installed it again. It seemed the problem was elleviated, as halflife.wad was accepted. But, the other two still weren't. It crashes again. I go to open VHE again, and now it simply crashes as soon as I click on either the shortcut or the .exe. I've reinstalled and restarted numerous times, but I just can't seem to get rid of this problem.

Here's The Offender:

Any ideas on what to do?

You said you're going to Steam, so did you go ahead and save those wad files before making the switch, or were these extracted afterwards using that cache extractor tool? If the second one is the case, maybe it's just got an invalid WAD file. See if you can find other versions that haven't been extracted (although this is doubtful since it didn't accept halflife.wad first, and then it did accept it later)

You may also have a virus or spyware gumming up the works. http://www.lavasoftusa.com for all your spyware removal needs.

Well, the wad files used by NS cant be corrupted because I play NS way too much (plus they wern't extracted from a GCF file, they came with the NS installation). I wouldn't be able to play those maps if the wads were corrupted. I did reisntall Ns again just to be safe, but no luck. I unpacked the HL stuff again just in case as well, but to no avail.

And no spyware or viruses in sight.

Try using a different version of Hammer/Worldcraft perhaps..? No idea, but it usually only seems to kill Windows through graphics problems. Although if you know a thing about the registry, you could try completely purging it of anything Hammer related and try again :/

It seems 3.4 does the same thing. And the only real registry enterings for VHE are for the map file formats.

[EDIT] It seems to have been fixed. I moved the wads I needed to somewhere where they would have a shorter file path, then reinstalled VHE so the texture browser was clean, and it worked. I can add all the wads now. I don't know if this actually fixed it, but hey, I'm happy.

ok, my eyes hurt this morning so i haven't read all this but..

1) hammer only needs access to the textures to function, i made a totally separate folder, outside steam and my hammer functioned just fine.

2)reinstall HL someplace outside steam, you don't need to use it to frag online, just point hammer to it, and map.. later you can copy/paste the maps you make to steam.

3) if you didn't back up all your valuables before installing steam, AFTER all the warnings we have posted here at SP, well, you aren't going to receive much sympathy i am afraid

hammer and steam, do not have to know each other exists.. set your pc up that way and you will be fine.

I think he may have made normal posts worth about half a snarkmark btw, that might explain it.

Yup, a single post was worth up to 5 marks which is plain silly when you have several thousand posts. You do get more for maps and correct answers now, though.

Thanks for all the advice, but just in case Matt and Orpheus didn't notice, I already fixed it the day before they posted. I'll mark Orpheus' answer correct anyway.

Bump the amount you get for tutorials too. You should get a good bit more for a good tutorial than for a good map I think.

ahh, thanx, you could have marked yours correct yesterday i suppose and it would have been ok..

i woke up this morning and just scanned the question and put my answers.. didn't realize you fixed it, cause it was an open reply still..

sorry, my bad.

lep, i honestly feel that post counts should not apply toward snarkmark totals.. all it does is single me out once again.. i really don't need, or want the distinction of "forum whore"

removing the counts may hurt a few people, but us being here and posting, should be an honor, not a reward.. rewards should only be for extra effort, such as maps, tuts and reviews...

/ 2 cents

[edit] BTW snarkmarks do not match post counts.. mine are 2270 and 2262 respectively..

An automatic system for submitting reviews would be nice. What say you?
