zooms in the game or in the editor?

Try reinstalling your mouse drivers

Option 1: Check that the mouse button works in other programs first. Might just be a mouse problem.

If this is a problem in the 3D view, you can get the same function by holding down SPACE and both mouse buttons at the same time, then dragging up or down to zoom in and out. Moving the mouse left and right will pan your view. You can also hold down space to look around (mouse1) or pan vertically/horizontally (mouse2). Space dragging also works in 2d views, but not zooming, unfortunately.

For quick and easy zooms in the 2d views, place your cursor where you want to zoom in and press the 1-0 keys on the keyboard. This will cycle through the 10 main zoom settings and keep your grid from getting messy-looking as can happen with mouse wheel zooming.

Hopefully those alternatives are useful, if you weren't aware of them already.

if you want zoom levels in the 3D view, hit the "X" key and walk around like in the game, alot better lol

spacebar/mouse navigating gives far more precision than in-editor keyboard navigation can ever give, and faster movement at that. So neener!

Just by using the mouse ... I rarely use the keyboard for views in hammer, only if I'm "nudging" an item.

Well, by clicking the camera tool you can. Otherwise you at least need to hold down space, just as I mentioned above. BUT you can do that with any tool selected, which is another advantage over actually switching to the camera tool to move around (which I'm hoping died out in `99  ).

I've had the same problem. Not sure what causes it but try clicking on the 2d views and pushing/holding alt and/or maybe ctrl. I know this answer sounds kinda vague but just mess with it as I'm nearly positive it will solve your problem.

Hold ctrl+mousewheel in a 2d window. This makes every 2d window zoom the same amount, and after doing this, normal mousewheel zooming should work.

On mine I never have to use the camera tool... I just move the mouse over the 3d view, then I can fly the camera around using mousewheel for forward/reverse, and the arrow keys for steering. Also, holding either ctrl or shift (can't remember) + the arrow keys is swim up/down and strafe left/right in the 3d view.

sorry mike don't know what to tell you about the 3d view. Since we're talking about mice here I just thought I'd add a tip for anyone with a 5 button mouse. I've bound the selection tool and the clipping tool to my extra buttons and it has sped up my mapping a great deal.
