I need some help with some texturing on cliffs. I had already cut out the cliffs and then I decided to go ahead and texture them. I am using 4 rock textures that are suppose to align side by side. Each texture is set at 2x in size and the y value is set at 0. I need an easy way to get the textures aligned side by side. Each face is a different size length wise but their height is the same.

To be honest I don't think you will get an easy solution to this problem, it sounds like you have a rather complex texturing scenario and typically a program can never really accomodate for all eventualities. What sort of cliffs have you made - triangle terrain, skewed square faces, something else?

Elaborate more on the four rock textures. Are they default hl textures or
custom? Do any of them have special details on them that you need? One
good quality rock texture is usually fine to use across large areas as the repetition isn't really noticeable.

Try ticking the "Align to World/Face" buttons on your texture application tool, and experiment a little with that.

The are square faces and they are default half life textures.
Also how come everytime I come to the forums I don't see this thread?

Get a single custom rock texture and screw the variation, will take loads less effort and I swear it will look better for it

First of all let me suggest getting better cliff textures. There are
some decent ones in the tfc.wad if you don't want to bother searching.
It isn't essential that you use a different cliff texture on each
seperate face, they tile fine and nobody is going to notice if your
cliffs have a reasonable amount of detail. If you just go with using
the one texture, align it on one of the faces the way you want it. Then
with the texture application tool open click on the face so it
highlights and then right-click on the other faces.

I find a quicker way to do masses of faces (such is the case for lots of rockwork) is to use the texture replacement tool. Texture all the faces of the rock with your rock texture, ignoring alignment, scaling, or whatever. Now bring up the texture application window, change the mode to "select", and choose your rock texture. Hit "replace", ensure the "find" section has your rock texture in it and the "replace" section is blank. Check "everything" under replace in, and "do no replace textures". Now press ok, and all your rock faces should be selected. Now you can set your scale and rotation, align them all "to world", and use the alignment shortcuts to get it looking how you want, nice and easy.

I use that method too, after you suggested it in my map thread. I
assumed he only had a few faces though. Oh and up yours for beating me
twice Blair.

Ok I will have to try that.
On another note though I seem to be having some troubles on this forum. Everytime I come to the forums I don't see my thread. I have to do a search on it to get to it. What's wrong?

Not really sure what that could be. Are all the other editing threads displaying correctly? What browser are you using?
Click on your name to go to your profile. From there hit the 'forum
posts' link on the left. For now, you can get into the thread
slightly easier form there.

ReNo I didn't exactly get what you mean so I am going to guess and say that what you do is go and just put the textures in randomly to get a dispersed affect. I actually went and played the begining of Half Life on the tram scene to view the rocks in the outdoor areas and I noticed the excellent Half Life mappers just put there textures in randomly. I think I will try that to see the results. I could have also avoided all of this by just starting with one big flat surface, aligned all the textures, and then use vertex manipulation to make my moves. Of course it is too late for that. Thanks anyways for your help though, I have pretty much solved my problem. I will have to come here more often for mapping help.

It was me. I thought you were trying to align large masses of different rock textures. You were using the same one. Right?

Indeed, can't think of a good way to align loads of different textures of different sizes I'm afraid, not without a great deal of playing around in hammer first.

After fiddling a little with the cliffs for the past few days I believe I have come up with a good way to get realistic looking cliffs and their textures to line up properly. I have also come up with a new way to align textures along curves but I am still perfecting that one right now. I might just have to write up tutorial on it.
