thats right, for whatever reason (and a good reason whatever it is) valve encoded a mp3 player into steam, while its not yet suppose to be mainstream, it can be very easily by using these steps.

Samp!

And you guys hated steam...

Seems quite good. I wonder why they havent made it a proper player and listed it as a feature.

Maybe it's a lazy way to let games play mp3 music in the background- usually you get analogue tracks on the CD or something, plus you wouldn't need to code a music player into each and every game they make...

yah, thats what i was thinking...hmmm is ambient_generic under fire here? ...lol

the only downfall is you have to either keep all your mp3's in valve dir(or sub dir of valve), or have duplicates on your HD(shutters at the thought) which kinda sux.

I just run winamp anyways... I've never really had a problem with running HL and it at the same time.

the only reason you would , would be hardware related anyways prolly...

my old K62 400 refused to play two programs at once where sound was involved..

but my 1.4 has no compulsions, it plays all sounds i want..

anyways, it seems to me that an MP3 player incorporated, might relieve the issues of adding music to a map.. cause it would be more in tune (excuse the pun) with the format most have already on their systems

well monqui, most have trouble when they attempt to alt+tab outta HL to change volume, and end up losing all volume, Samp (as im calling it "S"team Amp) allows for volume control (and this is different from HL normal console "volume #" command) so you can easily lower, or raise volume of your music, while ingame, also while leaving the game volume normal. and aswell stop the music while not risking alt+tab, and stay ingame.

Neat.  Have you tried creating shortcuts to your MP3s in the Valve directory yet?  The Sims used to allow that for its radio stations, so you wouldn't actually have to have the MP3s there, just shortcuts to them.

Just get the winamp plugin called "System Hotkeys Plug-in v1.1". Basically, it lets you re-assign the default key commands to system commands, which are global key commands. Meaning, no matter what application is currently "active," the command will be executed through winamp WITHOUT causing it to become the active app, meaning no lost sound issues. Pretty nice.
