Blu-ray discs can apparently hold 25Gb, and 50Gb ones are in the pipeline.

Too bad they'll be insanly expensive and held under the Naziship of SONY.

Also, name something that really needs that amount of space ... seriously.
The DVD format is too new to up and change to a new format.

There are still plently of people who've never seen a DVD, who're in countries that sell them.

SONY better lose a lot of money ... because I don't like them ... or their computers. f**king purple.

People said the same thing about 500 MB Hard drives...

I wouldn't mind putting ten or so divx movies on one disc

I'm not talking about personal storage.

SONY is planning on marketing them as a replacement for DVDs.
If they succed DVD-BR would cost a s**t load more then what a DVD costs now.

Would you honestly buy these things if they cost 10 times as much on a specialized burner?

If I had money to burn.

Seriously though, the prices will come down, and as long as the drives are backward compatible with DVDs and CDs I see no reason why it wouldn't succeed. Going to blue lasers is just the natural progression of the technology. Eventually they'll have to start using electron beams instead of lasers. Then things will get really expensive  . I hope all storage goes solid-state before then.

well then, tell me why they don't just put movies and general media on flash memory (or something less prone to being written over)? Because that's faster then any laser you could make, since that information gets loaded anyway (even if it's streamed).

The entire reason why they strayed away from cartriges with consoles was because of space. They've solved that issue. Meaning we should use them again.

And to be quite honest it'd be cheaper then Blue Rays.

I don't think it will end up cheaper in bulk. Not yet anyway. BR may be expensive to begin with, but I expect you will find the cost per unit data to still end up being lower. Last time I checked a GB of flash memory was still hugely expensive compared to any optical disk. I'd love to see everything solid-state as I said, but I think it'll be a while.

The capcity of blue ray will be used instantly when they put a barely-compressed (for max. quality) HD movie on it... Not to mention higher quality sound, choice of camera angles, the list goes on.

If you looked back at anybody saying as DVDs came out 'who needs those, we have VCD', you would laugh.

According to the BBC site, one use would be to put every Simpsons episode ever released onto a single disc...
