Can anyone recommend a free website control panel like CPanel for *nix machines? I haven't seen too many options around. All I can see are either not free, and/or they are for win32(funnily).

I'm looking for something which has some basic features like a simple file manager, handling MySQL databases, allow/disallow FTP users etc. (Actually, I think that's all I'm looking for :/ ). (I'm not looking for a CMS.)

The only useful control panel I have seen so far is PHPerl, and it doesn't look to be too far into development to be safe. It does set up the entire server though, which I also need to do anyway.

*edit: Looks like Cpanel is an entire hosting solution, for hosting providers and customers et al. I don't want something at that level though. Just something which'll let me do admin-things remotely via a web interface.

did you dig that up from email, Orph? looks suspiciously like one of those hotmail "OMG EXTERNAL LINK ALERT!" messages...

either way it doesn't work as a site

it was sent to me from a fellow clan member when i asked him for advice on setting up a server for file sharing.. uhh, you know my stockpile of taboo material is substantial, i wanted a way to send/receive from my home to theirs, with no one in between.

anywho's i apologies if its unacceptable.

BTW, it should be a link to omnicron technologies.. if it leads elsewhere please let me know.

No no, not taboo.. when I followed the link it was a blank HTML page with a little bit of text along the top..
Your email message has been idle and this link has become inactive. To access the link, close this window and return to your Message. Then click the browser's Refresh button or close your message and reopen it.
And the Firefox window has that doofy little MSN butterfly along the title bar as well

edit, pah, youve sorted it  disregard this then

That seems to be a http server for win32 from the looks of it. I'm actually looking for something to help administer such a server remotely. Thanks for the link though. It seems like a good tiny server

sorry it didn't serve.. i am not sure the distinction between "remote" and "local" administration, other than the definitions of local and remote.. i assume you are wanting to be able to change your settings from anyplace on earth? isn't that what lep does here? i mean, from home, or abroad?

That's exactly what Lep does (and most other webmasters) and I want to do. But I think Oktagone gives customers CPanel accounts. But CPanel is not free, and hence I am looking for a free alternative.

There's a difference though. Lep isn't using a premade database set up.
And it's incredibly easy to just connect to a server through an ftp client or a shell and edit away.

Using premade panels and sites is ... annoying. I hate it when people use crap like PHPNuke, because they're too lazy to learn the language themselves, then get confused when they change something and the page dissappears (from them creating an invalid command).

I don't understand the first part about the premade database setup. Secondly, An FTP manager will only handle files. And setting up a shell might be a bit tough. First off, I'll probably be accessing it through windows machines. So the server has to be telnet, and not ssh. And telnet would involve broadcasting my password in plaintext over a CS department network (half of which is probably running ethereal and/or nmap). doesnt seem like a good idea.

And besides, a shell might have large quantities of the Geek Factor, but it's not as convenient as something like CPanel. Try out both ways if you dont believe me.

I dislike CMSs myself , but they are the best way for a newbie to get started. I mean, if someone wants to put content on a page, he shouldn't have to worry with learning a whole new scripting language. I've never used one, but considering how easy it is to screw up with PHP and leave a gaping security hole, everyone's happier with a well made CMS.
