Obviously a player cannot walk on a ramp that has a steep slope, but I
don't want to make a ramp in my map with too gentle of a slope as this wastes
space. I don't know how steep/gentle I can make a slope, so...

1) How steep/gentle can I make a slope?

2) How can I see the steepness of the slope using the views in Hammer?

1. I'm not sure, I think a 45 degree angle is max, but I'm not sure

2. Use the units (blocks), for example a 45 degrees could be 10x10, 20x20, 30x30 etc... units. Ratios of units could be used for degrees. 1:1 for 45 degree.

Was messing with a player-clip textured solid earlier for something in my map and was walking up and down it at 55 degree. I also figured 45 would do it, but nope. And then 55 still didn't! Had to wind up using a different technique since the angle got so extreme it got in the way of something else :/

What ever the max angle is, it seems pretty high.

You could also put a ladder brush onto the slope then you can climb it at any angle (below 90 :biggrin: )!

Use an entity (not sure which one) to mute the ladder sound, otherwise it would seem wired :eek:

If you have a slope so steep the player can't climb, and are considering putting a ladder brush over the slope.. DONT. At this point, you have some sort of basic design flaw, and need to rework the area so that you can either have a longer, more gentle slope, elevator, stairs, an actual ladder..etc. If the slope is so steep that the player can't climb it.. he shouldn't. If you try to fake it, or rig it in some bizzarre fashion, the result will just end up looking and feeling awkward.

This is one of the biggest and hardest lessons for new mappers to learn; the underlying design/flow/connectivity of a level has to be ROCK SOLID. Take your layout and rough it out, working out these kinds of issues, so that you don't end up with some strange situation that you have to 'rig' to get working. After the underlying structure is good... then go on to the detailing phase and you should be able to layer all the 'pretty' and 'fun' stuff without much problem. At some point, we are all guilty of going in and building cool s**t, without really planning things out...then running into some basic design/connectivity problem. Plan, Plan, Plan, Plan!
