I believe they are automatically placed by the engine depending on the texture you use. You won't see them ingame unless either model detail is high or your running directx 8 or something or other...

thanks that helps, and also makes sense, right now im mapping on my crappylaptop and can only run on low deatail, and can only support directx 7

Yeah they're supposed to be automatically created with the displacement textures...but they don't. I get an error when I compile complaining that the models could not be found (they are actually prop_details). Any clues as to why?
