Hi all,

Im making a map (Hardcore) and its going pretty well. Just started working a bit on the lightning. I made a couple of light_spot and some point_spotlight....

Now my frame drops to ~ 30 fps. Normally its ~ 150 fps......

Cus this be of the lightning or somting else?

If some1 wants 2 help i cud send him my map and maybe if some1 cud look into it id really apreciate it as now it kinda sux :'(

Thanks in advance!

Oddy

No it isn't because of lighting.

However, I bet you had to look at the Rspeeds read outs to find out there was an unnoticable FPS drop.

In any case, unless it drops to like 20 or so, ignore it.

If it drops lower your brushes are rediculously being cut and you
should alter then to an acceptable manner in hammer to get fewer faces
in game.

architecture and r_speeds may still apply.

truly, with so little information, its hard to determine exactly why you are suffering framerate drops..
could be your style of mapping, or something as basic as, the compile didn't finish.

Then put in those fancy light thingys... Compiled correctly. Played.... And voila only 30 fps. So its def those light thinks... :S

Well, geez, if it's hl2. It's because it's hl2.

Yeah, now lighting can effect it. The reason why HL1 lighting wouldn't
effect modern gamers computer is because they're not taxing at all.

Hl2 is a different situation though.

It may very well be the lights. But don't bitch about 30fps. Try
running through the SP game while reading some fps readouts, there are
many points where it may drop to 15 for a second or two.

I'd suggest if you REALLY want it to perform better, just decrease
texture quality one step or so. (It's a real video-card memory killer).

Other then that, there's really nothing you can do. However, I am
assuming you're not using overly complex brushes and stuff that will
make the visual matrix get too big.

<!--StartFragment -->Try checking the "no dynamic light" flag on the point_spotlight's. Dynamic lighting is a killer on low end computer's. (ala doom 3) Especially if the lights cant move then there is no need for dynamic light anyways.

And if you are getting 150 fps, I would suggest adding some detail :leper:

Why? Makint a hldm2 map instead of sort of a single player map fitted into a dm map like most ppl are doing.

I play ag, and know fps is very important and i dont like all those details. Just want 2 shoot...
In SP detail is nice imo, but in multi kinda useless..

Adding detail doesnt have to affect playablility. at 150 fps yyou
are getting far too much fps and its just wasted. You can add
things like decals and stuff to spice it up a bit without impeding
player motion by adding oil drums and random crap.

Plus if you liked the answer you should mark it correct and throw a few snarkmarks my way
