hi im new to all of this and i have a problem with hammer i think.
im trying to make a simple map simalar to all the tutorials out them. a box plan and simple.
i set up the sdk and load it and im in hammer. start new map. i
select block tool. the first one. i drag out a 1280 squre and then
press ENTER the box in 2D mode turns red. everyhting fine.
i lok in 3D window and it is still in a wire frame veiw. all the
tutorials i see its filled in looking. i noticed the proble cuase
when i wen tto "make hollow" it wouldnt let me input ANY
number. what is my problem. i try zooming in and out but is
no change. i even have a video tut and im doing every thing
exactly the same. but mine not working the smae way. i
unistalled sdk and reinstalled smae thing. is it a brush/box skin
i cant change or see what is on. im not sure if im useing the
right wording or terms but think you'll get the point.

uhh...i think u have to right click on 3d view....and select texture...try this maby itt will work

make sure your box has length, width AND depth. It sounds as if you only "made" the box using one of the three views. make sure your box is set up on all 3 to ensure the right size if it is set as the default size which would be 1, then you can't possibly hollow it out using 16-sized walls can you. ALSO, if you're inside the box it'll appear as wireframe. AND to make your 3d view textured click on the 3d view and go to the view menu |3d textured polygons

ok i just made a box 1024 on the top view and 1024 on the side view.
i hit enter and the square turns red. now whats the correct way
to make it hollow? what do i select? i selected the pionter tool.
should i rigth click the center of the square in any window or should
right click the edge?

ok im a moron and didnt have the camara veiw selected right? i have the
tectured 3d view. but still cant not make hollow. i want to
make it -16. when im in the make hollow sceen defualt it says 0 i
cant type the "-" but wont let me input number..s

ok im never posting here again. im a moron, its 6:00 here in the usa.
ive been fighting this for over 5 hours. i had the number lock
on. i this its time for bed.. thanks for the info guess.
when i get the balls to show my face around here agin try not to make
fun.. haha im a tried ideiot

Click on the brush with your mouse, right click on it and select "hollow".

Lol....so silly. This is why you try the keypad AND the other number row if you can't get a number to work.
