Motherboard blues

Something weird is going on with my comp. After a sudden crash, i found that my computer refuses to boot up any of my 2 operating systems, preferring to display a 15miliseconds blue screen and then reset. After inspecting my machines guts, i found that non of my hardware is damaged except for one thing: the JCLK jumper, which is simply melted off!For those who don't know, the JCLK is the CPU FSB Select jumper (selects the front side bus of the CPU installed on the mainboard). Can this cable be bought seperately? Or is this not the problem?

After googling around for 30 minutes i found several ppl, very fond of overclocking, stating that they removed this jumper in order to improve their CPU performance. If the comp runs without it, then...what could the problem be?!

A jumper should easily be able to be replaced. If you remove the jumper
it's a setting of "open" on both of the possible circuits (presuming
there are 3 pins and one 2-pin jumper.) It might just have a default
for the motherboard to accept all FSBs if the circuits are open, but it
also might be the cause of the issue. Try getting a jumper from
somewhere (they're all the same, HDD, Motherboard, etc.) I bet even
wrapping tinfoil around it would work (but not recommended :razz: )

I think a larger issue is: It got hot enough to MELT the jumper.

Yea, me wonders how that could fuse like that. Then again, could have simply been a spark. Which is what Im thinking.

One thing that had me scratching my head for hours at coop the first few weeks was a dead motherboard. Because of a burnt diode. A piece no bigger than 2mm by 2mm on a motherboard of the ATX size (200 some millimeters by 300 some millimeters)

Go figure... lol

If you completely melted a jumper, then you've got a serious problem somewhere... Have it checked out before you melt something more expensive.

I've managed to read what the blue screen says (using a digicam in burst mode :sad: ): UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. But this could be caused by 1000 types of errors in the F.SYS.

Linux? Do you have a partition on your hard drive?

Can you get to the POST test screen? If so, go into BIOS and set first boot to floppy then insert one with partition magic (FDISK) and check for a partition on your hard drive. Thats what Im thinking.

The split second blue screen of death - something I'm quite familiar
with due to Half-Life 2 - is apparently caused by components getting
too hot. Windows automatically shuts down after this error to "protect"
components. Having said that, this isn't the source of my problems with
HL2, so it could be something else.

Thanks for the help, guys. I've managed to solve the problem VIA the XP CD setup. :biggrin: Now, if i could only figure out why that cable melted...

Best guess, spark. Definatly not due to case temperatures.

It is possible. I used to make spark-detonators for my...ahem...alcohol bombs with partially separated wires.
