I got an idea for a map but i need help on the best way to make a river and waterfall.

I was thinking of doing it by creating my own water material that flows (is it possible or is there a func_converor still) and for the actual waterfall i was thinking of making my own material again but maybe a little lighter and dense then adding steam at the bottom using env_steam but this will still no give the best waterfall effect as with a waterfall you get all the sprays of water coming out of it.

Is there an easier way of building a waterfall or am i going along the right tracks?

You are on the correct track (your own custom texture). Unless you want to set up a set of massive trains and doors to simulate effect that the water is falling. But even with that I dont think that the water texture works correctly with anything else other than func_water. Other than that I have no clue other than making your own material.

Well, I know that map has it shortcomings, mostly cause I started with bsp brushes and oldschool mapping methods before I learned about displacement mapping. I messed up by not starting over, but had all ready put in mega time into this project.

Two things have to say to you- Good for you, I hope you can do better than my map and would like to see it when you get good WIP going. Second, plan. Plan out every bsp brush and your water layout, BEFORE you start displacment mapping. I find it very hard to rip out a displacement map that is worked in with other maps cause of a lack of forsight.
