I know this is a mainly a mapping forum, but I figured somone would know...
How do I get the original skins from the HL2 weapons / player models, to be turned into a editable file, like a jpg. This was easy to do in the original HL Model Viewer, but the new version dosn't seem to have a custom skin import / export. Thanks for help  .

You have to put the model in XSI to extract the skin.

you can use hammers texture browser to find the ones you want. it will also tell you what subfolder of your materials directory they are in. use player or weapon as a filter to find them more easily.

if you don't have the full directory already unpacked, you can use gcfscape.exe to browse your materials.gcf and extract the texture/s that you want to edit. the textures are held in .vmt format, and need to be converted with vtf2tga.exe, which is a command line thing that can be found in you sourcesdk/bin folder, or something like cannonfoders vtftool, which can be found halfway down this page
