does anyone know how to make the textures that you can make certian parts transparent? (like the old hl textures with the blue)

only for source instead

ive alreaddy read the tut over at hl2world but it diddnt cover exactly what i needed
the only problem with steam updating things every week is it doesent give the developers an incentive to playtest thier work, so we do it for them

First of all you need to create what is called an alpha channel in your
image. Alpha channel's are most typically used as a transparency mask
for your image - letting you block out areas that are opaque and other
areas that can have variable transparency. To do this you'll wanna
crack open Photoshop / PSP and create a new alpha channel - to do this
in PS you click the "channels" tab on the same palette as the layers
tab, and press the "create new channel" button at the bottom of the
palette. Now select this channel, and any areas you paint with white
will be opaque and areas you paint black will be completely invisible.
Use different grey values to get partial transparency.

Finally you need to save your texture as a 32 bit TGA. You then compile
this into a VTF as usual, and write a VMF file that features the
"$transluscent" or "$alpha" commands depending on what effect you want.

the whole of the texture is transparent because the whole of the alpha layer is various shades of gray. it is the varying grayness that will give varying transparency.

make your alpha layer all black, with the holes you want all white, with no inbetween grays, and follow the rest of the tut.
