Now, i've followed the Hammer tutorial, looked at the file, and used
Leperous' tutorial...and I still can't get skyboxes to work. This
is my first map ever so i'm really a newb and if anyone else has had
difficulties like I have i was wondering if you could, perhaps, break
it down a little bit and help me figure out what i've done wrong.
I've followed the tutorials exactly so it might be something that is
"common knowledge" that I don't know because i'm a newb. Help
please.
thanks

First off are you trying to make a regular skybox or a 3D skybox?

ok, i've tried the tutorials. the results i got were basically
the same as when you knock out a wall and leave the open space
there. When something moves over the space the image of it stays
there...so if you look at the sky for too long you have say 50 images
of your gun and whatever else may be on the screen stuck there until
you look away. (i'm not sure if that makes any sense, but i'm not
sure how else to explain it).
and it doesn't matter between regular and 3d skyboxes. I've been
trying the 3D tutorials, but at this point i'll settle for a regular as
long as it works. It would be cool to be able to get the 3d one
to work though.

Regular skybox:
Go to the Map menu, click on Map Properties. SkyBox Texture Name should be set to something like sky_wasteland02.
Next, in your map, apply the texture tools/toolsskybox to the surface you want to appear as sky. It'll show in your map as a light blue colour with a dark blue grid and the word "skybox" on it.

i've done that and it doesn't work. it just has a black screen
when i run the map. And whenever something passes over it the
image is repeated...almost as if you're having really bad lag, but its
only when you look at the sky.

I have that same problem. It was really anoying cus I had to find a way to fix the background or I couldnt play cus of the all the mixed colors. So far, I have to settle with making a box around the edge of my map and putting a background on the walls of the box. So, my map works but I'm always inside a box and the picture I put on the sides is repeated all over it or I can put a textured picture on and it apears once in the corner, leaving the rest of the side to look weird. Ur not alone........

this can vary from cs-hl2 +dm. i suggest that you type into the
textures browser skybox and look for one you like eg skybox/ (picked
sky box) but you dont type this into ur map properties skybox texture
name.... you would just type the full name dont include like rt,lt,up
etc. for cs i usually use de_cobble a nice partialy couldy map. how
ever have you coated ur sky in the tools/skybox texture this might be
ur problem. if you havent did this you wont get a sky.

looks like your not using the right texture. You dont pic the picture you want you pick the tools/toolsskybox and place it where ever you want sky to show

I want to add something to this: it's actually pretty annoying that you
can't just pick the right sky texture and paste it on a large box
around your level, because if you need to position an env_sun, then
where is the bloody sun. It's kind of hard to figure out if you don't
have the texture there. Not only the sun by the way, but also general
lighting, where does it come from if you don't have the skybox as a
reference?

most sky box textures with a sun will have the sun face along the X axis at about -45 degrees.

If you're seeing things repeating like that, it's because you're seeing into the 'void' (off into infinity in the space that you build your level in). Surrounding your level with brushes, preferably skybox ones (on which the game draws the sky) will stop this. And yes it should be common knowledge to do this
