IMO, the transition is just too sudden. Maybe have the edges
where the symbol and ground meet be a little rough, or make the grey
plane sort of bumpier like water or somthing.
Otherwise, I love it. Very cool, just that one little thing.

I'd use a HL2 effect to do the grey, to give it the impression of being HL2!

I saw a vat of 500 degree Aluminum a few weeks ago. See if you can find some pctures of that and make the symbole dipping into that. Its got a super shiny but not reflective quality.
and put some liquid metal spatters on the logo, and give the logo a more wethered look.

I know its been a while, but I've finnally updated the image. I
actually did it weeks ago, but the same day I got UT2k4 the very same
day. Combined with work and dial up, its been a hassle.
