Using alt-clicking to wrap the texture smoothly around corners is the best thing you can do. You will still get visible borders since the only way to align the texture for the lower edges would be proper UV texture-mapping, which Hammer doesn't support. Then there is lighting... even if you use proper smoothing groups there will likely stay sharp shadows between some polygons.
It's no coincidence that details like this pipe are done as prop models in Source. It's the only way to get them smooth.

while you're at it alt+r click the wall all the way around the curve as well, you will see an improvement
