I hardly ever defragment my hard drive. The fragmentation is never over 5%, and this is normally due to one crazy file that has split itself into a thousand parts. Also, many of the fragmented files are too big for the foolish defragmentation tool to rearrange (for some reason).

Ok, serious question guys. Im having performance issues, be it with Half-Life 2, Hammer (for HL2) UT2k4, etc.

Hardware:

Athlon XP 2500
512mb RAM PC2700
NF7-S mobo
Seagate 80gb 8mb cache SATA

You know the specs lol

Software:
Aston Windows Shell replacement
AVG anti-virus
MSN 7.0 BETA
Limewire
winAMP
gmail notifer
VHE for HL2

Should I get a component upgrade (I was thinking adding 512RAM) or
should I scrap some software, notably having limewire in background
when I dont need it and the Aston Shell.

Keep in my my budget is VERY tight. I have 100$ in my account, I get 250$ every 2-weeks, and I have to fly once a month (150$)
STRANGE ,

i got:

amd athlon 1200 mhz

geforce 2 mx 64mb

256 mb SDram

win ME

and 40 GB hard disk

my hl2 runs normal on low settings and css runs on low settings with shders on high with 50 fps

so i think theres something wrong with you pc, maybe viruses etc. ? spyware?

only hl2 hammer crahses coz i lack win XP, but tomorrow that ends

Hm, yes, win-defrag is rather useless.

i thought so too, till i read about disabling the pagefile beforehand.

my files all lined up like ducks in a row afterward, and then i turned pagefile back on.
i will be doing this before every defrag from now on.
