I'm stupid, help me please

I bought an Nvidia 5200FX card today for my comp and installed it. I go to play WoW on low settings and I'm still getting lag. I'm running on cable internet so whats wrong and how can I get my game to run smooth?

Hmm. Are you getting any visual problems? (weird s**t I mean). The lag may simply be due to bad servers/ bad net code...? And what's WoW anyway ? (Sorry to sound clueless).

Oh. Since it's internet, are you leaving your fire wall on? If so, then consider turning it off -- In a couple of games, I lag misserbly with it on.

nvidia cards are fickle critters, you absolutely must uninstall any other drivers.. plus its always a plus to run one of those driver seeker programs to remove any residual crap left over.

if you have issues, its not the card (unless its defective) or your machine.. its most likely something YOU failed to do.

go to the nvidia site, follow the links to those seeker programs i mentioned.

Well its a new game, prolly crap net code or just plain crap connection. Might be better of with even faster net :razz:

Do you mean lag as in internet lag, or low frame rates and "visual lag"?

Well I noticed that some areas are a bit more laggier than others so its kinda hard to tell.

Find out an FPS command then come back :razz:

You could always use fraps to determine the FPS rate.

Fraps is used for recording and it drops your FPS while running it, fool.

my m8 had this problem but that was becouse his other hardware didn't realy work with that gfx card well, it might be that your other hardware is screwing it up, try de-installing all gfx drivers and installing the newest drivers for your card, i suggest www.nvidia.com .

if that doesn't work i think you might want to get a other ge force card. my m8 got another one , slightly newer model for the same price and that did work.

My PC specs are 1ghz PIII, 256mb ram, and Geforce 5200FX. Those specs should run the game fine.

No, those specs wouldn't run the game at a desireable framerate if you want any detail whatsoever...

You think I'll get any improvent upgrading to 512mb ram? I really want to get as much joy outa this game as possibe. This is one of the few games I have bought in the last few years and I think its awesome. I'll be playing long from now.

personally, i think your bottleneck is the "PIII" part.. WoW is awfully new, and power hungry.

increasing to 512 wont help much cause its most likely either P100 or P133 ram, both are slow as hell.

the card is prolly drawing as much power from your processor as the game is, cause its so new.. i bet it even has to slow down cause the AGP slot is so old.

it only drops frames when recording, when not recording it doesnt drop the frames.

for any new games you really need the following: at least 2Ghz, 1GB of RAM and a newer bus speed like anything that includes DDR, and your vid card is good!

Some of the lag is cause by latency on the servers parts. That's the part that kills me the most. Also when I get into areas where there is a large amound of people and enemies. Other than that the game runs fine. You think Blizzard will improve the servers over time so that there is better latency? Also would upgrading to 512mb ram make any major or noticable improvement in the game?

Ram will help more then you're implying. Anything to prevent HDD access will help beyond words.

Although I doubt WoW will run smoothly. The processor ISN'T the bottleneck.

Most likely the bandwidth of the bus, ram, and graphics card slot are what is holding it back.

Put your settings on the absolute
lowest choices.
Turn off ALL other programs. And I do mean ALL.
Every program you can close without compromising the system you
should turn off.

DO NOT Over clock your video card. The rest
of your hardware is holding it's performance back. Over clocking will
not do anything. (I don't know if anyone mentioned it, I'm just
mentioning it so it doesn't cross your mind)

Other then that
you'd probably have to get new hardware :sad:

I don't suggest
Defragging. Most files that are saved on your HDD are contiguous, so
defragging wont do much of anything (except eat up time and
resources.)

I already do that. I think there might be a problem with my internet because after playing for an hour my latency goes through the roof for no reason. It happens everytime.

Well I fixed one of my problems. I only had 1.8mb available physical memory. I cleared up my desktop and deleted a lot of stuff off my recycle bin and now I have 88.8mb of available physical memory.

1 GHz P3??? Isn't that one of the most unstable CPUs ever made?
