Im wondering if this is a bug in HL2 itself or a video card driver
issue. When you look downwards towards the water there is an invisible
line through the gun. It happens when the water is around 56 units
high, just enough that you can still walk in it. When you look down
your gun enters the water. To see if it happens to you or not check the
sdk_water map because it happens to me there too.

Im using the 2nd newest ATI drivers and I didnt see any related fixes in the new drivers but I'll install them just in case.

#1. What a waist of a forum post, does any one care about such a little bairly noticable bug that you happen to point out (ITS NOT EVEN SERIOUS)

#2. The problem probaly is happening because of the camera of the player or the gun being intersected by the waters serface where the change from under water <-> above water is taking place. Just ajust the water to be eather higher or lower than the player camera or dont bother posting.

#1 was uneeded iceman.

I think its a HL2 thing, not your video card.

Actually the newest ATI drivers did fix a lot of graphical problem in HL2. Try them.

This is a valid question, he was wondering if it was the map he build,
or a HL2 bug problem. so you guys cant complain about these posts (you
havent been here long enough  )

Well I installed the latest ATI drivers and it still happens so it looks like a HL2 bug.

And it matters to me because my map needs to have water that deep in
it. A bug is a bug. It doesn't matter how serious it is - it still
should be fixed.

This thread is weird, but the question is perfectly fine to ask to be honest.
A bug is a bug, and needs fixing
Don't forget to report it then!

Case closed!

I'd say it's a bug in HL2 - If it only happens when you enter into the water, but the water looks fine from the outside, it isn't being caused by anything you have done. Easiest solution to this would be to make the water at a different height.
