What are dev_ textures good for. Can I use dev_linoleumthingyd00darandomnumber for my floor?

developer textures are mainly used for scaling brushes. if you take a good look at them, you will find that they have dev testures for the official size of a door or the height of a counter. You apply them to a surface and simply line it up with the edges of your brush and clip the desired shape at the right angle and length simply by looking at it in the 3d view!

Some images in this post have been automatically down-sized, click on them to view the full sized versions:

"simply lining up" appears to be quite hard actually. I mean look at
the dimensions in my front & side views, they're 112*56 allright?
But the texture doesn't fit.

edit: and why does the linoleum texture have a dev_ prefix? I don't see how I could use it for scaling?

Your texture on that block isn't scaled right then. The point is yo use them for measuring, I've never made a door without using that texture, scaled correctly.

it's a 1:1 texture though? I don't get it.. I didn't alter one of the values in the texture applier.

edit: apparently writing a 0 in the Y field did the job. Zero != null for some reason.

Anyway, that leaves the problem of the dev_linoleum texture? Why is
that dev_ and not anything else? Since it looks like a regular texture..

They are just textures. You could use them in your final version map, but i think valve used them as place fillers before they knew what kind of textures they wanted.

your texture isn't aligned to the bottom, open the texture editor box and select that face, then press B.
