I am and would recommend it. You could even start some basic brush work
if you wanted. There's nothing stopping you from planning them at least
 .

Well first of all, brushes are not textures - brushes are the blocks,
arches, cylinders and what have you that build the form of your level.
These can be built as a DM map or single player map or whatever, and
easily turned into a DoD:S map. I'm sure DoD:S will mostly if not
exclusively use its own textures, so chances are your map will be all
white when you start running it as a DoD:S map, but it doesn't mean its
been a waste of time. Most of the textures are the same size, so its
easy to find a suitable temporary texture and then find a good
permanent texture that fits just the same once DoD:S is actually
available. I wouldn't recommend bothering with many/any props however,
unless they are also just generic placeholders like your textures.

I'm just porting a DoD map that I never finished to Source. That will
probably be the only DoD Source map I'll make unless I change my mind.

I would start with just the brush work, get it all sorted and then add models and textures.

i wouldn't bother my arse starting at all. but that's because i bought hl2 from a store, and i don't expect to be able to play DoD:s when it's released.
