K guys, what im aiming to do is make sort of catwalks out of light,
just like the ones in Halo, and not quite the combine bariers that only
let combine through.
Id like to make my own texture to do this too but im unsure what to save it as/where to put it etc.
but 2 main atributs it HAS to have, 1 transparant and 2 you can shoot through it.
i know i could just get a transparent texture and a player clip
textured pair of brushes, the transparant set to func_brush but i want
it to be all set up as 1 brush if possible

Read the tutorial on creating a custom texture. I think it covers
transparency, if not there are more than a few threads about it, as for
shooting through it, I believe that you can set that in the editor.

Yea all you have to do it make the texture add transparency and maybe some illumination.

You could try to make this using invisible brushes and point_spotlights...

Texture would be a lot better than point spots, if its a good texture.
