Its on now, just started... Opinions?

I think its the worst start song ever! Paul Mcartney singing like s**t and a crap song. If its the greatest rock show you want something legendary and amazing, not some old man old of tune!

G8 is some kind of big international meeting where all the world power discuss how they can fix stuff like poverty, hunger, and aids

Yer I know, but the fact that the Coldplay said everyone from it is g8, instead of saying gr8. You have to see it really, and you would of seen what asses everyone made of themselves.

Ricky Gervais aswell  Well out of order, his jokes were just distasteful, not funny.

Watched a fair bit of it. I reckon The Who were the best, and of course
Peter Kay. For those who didn't watch, Peter Kay refused to go off the
stage even when security had been called, as he was leading the crowd
in a rendition of "Amarillo".

...or you could stop whining about how bad it was and enjoy the good aspects of it? Its not like you were forced to watch it or had to pay a penny.

There wasn't much good stuff, highlights for me were the bad parts and Coldplay playing Bitter Sweet Symphony- now that was good!

It's just that because not many of the bands were on tour, the ones which weren't didn't sing very well (obviously haven't been warming thier voices much). I have to agree with the Linkin Park performance, it was very poor- I've seen them live before, and that performance in Philidelphia was way under par for them.

Its just amazing how I can see right through most of the bands- not many of them actually cared at all, they were just in it for publicity!

take it for what it was, not what you'd have liked it to have been. it wasn't a rockfest for the terminally insensitive, it was a charity gig to help save millions of people from dying of poverty.

I heard bits, though I'm sorry that I missed the sound of 200,000 people booing Mariah Carey for her shameless plug ("here's my new single..."). Another comedy highlight was Robbie Williams chatting up Fern Cotton (I think?) in an interview, obviously whilst stoned/wasted, and telling her how much she's blossomed and how they should get it on

If you wanna do something like Live8, then they should do it properly. I just think the bands weren't putting in the effort (well most of them) and as lep said, Mariah Carey obviously was just promoting.

And of course while these events do some good, they only target the
popular problems, ignoring the ones that actually cause the basic
problems in Africa. I'm not knocking the idea's or motivations behind
it, I just find it annoying when they quite happily attack the
currently unpopular offender, but let other just as important issues
slide, because they don't want to look bad.

Cancelling debt and sending aid is important, as well as raising public
awareness. But one of the key issues that needs to be addressed are
these cultures themselves. Thousands of children die each day primarily
because they keep having children when they can barely feed themselves.
As well as rebuilding basic infrastructure and other things, they need
to educate the people so they can help themselves. Send them condoms as
well as food and money, it ain't hard or expensive. Once that is under
control, it should be significantly easier to start fixing the problem
because it isn't constantly growing bigger.

Not to mention the terminally corrupt governments in most of those
countries, which is another hinderance. I'm sure most people wouldn't
mind the US going in and kicking some arse in those places.

I might have over simplified the problem a bit, and no doubt someone
may be offended, but thats how I see it. If you think about it, it does
make sense, I'm sure of it  .

And dammit, doesn't anyone else want to punch Bob Geldof in the face,
tell him to stop whinning, learn to sing, and write some decent bloody
songs  .

I didn't watch much, only around 10 minutes of it. But I really
enjoyed R.E.M for some reason. I've never really liked them when
I see them live, but I kind of enjoyed there performance.

I enjoyed the whole thing, for the most part. Snoop Dogg swearing was
humourous, but then Madonna do it afterwards was cringeworthy. But
it'll never actually stick in your mind as one of those days where you
know exactly where you were when you were watching it, something that
the original had.

It was good but forgettable, but its the same as Comic Relief; it can be excruciating but its all for a good cause.

Was at work with this guy who remembered live aid, he was saying how
memorable that was, that whole remembering where you were it happened
thing. This didnt have any of that for me, not sure why, probably didnt
help spending most of time at work just listening to some of it on the
radio.

The 1st one was about raising
money i understand, this was more about trying to get a message across, the fact you
got everyone all over the world uniting, which is quite admirable in
its own way.

Musically speaking, imo the problem was you add a mishmash of old bands
and upcoming bands of different genres and diffferent length sets all
playing seemingly in no real order (partly understandable given the
huge and varied audience). But that doesnt really matter ultimately, it
was never meant to be about the music, this isnt Glastonbury or
Download. As a charity concert bringing people together i imagine it
was hugely successful.

Btw did any of you think Razorlight looked nervous as hell?

I bet they were nervous. There are millions of people watching. Did
Live8 take place entirely in Philadelphia? I remember them saying there
were a million people at the concert in Philly. Which is a huge number
of people. Still not as big as the thing that India holds though. I
can't remember what it is but it has several hundred million people
that attend it. A lot of orphans come out of it too because they get
seperated from their families.

Much as I like 'Saint Bob' he might be setting himself up for a fall.
Its what I like to call Michael Moore syndrome; you become so actively
involved in a campaign that you become its poster boy, and enevitably
something the people groan at when they see. This is the fault of the
media entirely, they prefer to focus on indivuals rather than do real
journalism on a broader subject, so it becomes "Bob Geldoff is doing
this or that in africa" instead of what is actually going on.

Granted, the BBC have given an excellent level of coverage concerning
poverty in Africa, but then they aren't a commercial channel, like all
the other ones. It gives them the freedom to put things that heaven
forbid people might learn from, without fear of losing rating points,
and therefore money.

Anybody watch the Edinburgh Live 8 event this evening? I flicked onto
it every now and then, and found it to be stronger than the Live 8
events around the world on Saturday. Perhaps it was because it was in
an enclosed stadium as opposed to open parks, but the atmosphere looked
better, and the number of people there seemed higher (despite being a
lot lower). Unfortunately coverage of it on TV could have been a bit
better - there were a few cuts back to the presenter doing interviews
and whathaveyou at inappropriate moments (right in the middle of Bob
Geldof, Bono and Midge Ure's speeches?!), and really, does anybody care
to hear the same bloody standard explanation as to how the
bands/singers got involved?
