hey everyone -

Im migrating from HL 1 mapping, and maybe its just me, but im having some really strange problems since ive been experimenting with hl2 stuff, any help on resolving these would be nice.

1) Blend textures, im using the stock blend textures, and I paint an area with the alpha to make it look fancy, then i compile it - and it refuses to show the painted alpha..... All i see is the base texture. Whats the deal with this?????

2) Props, which stock static & physics props can you use for CS:S? Ive tried multiple random props and none of them appear at all..........

3) If i use textures and props from all different folders in steam will I need to include them somehow in the .bsp to be seen?? Im confused as to what I need to do in order for these materials to show up in game.......

By the way, Im using the stock CS:S .fgc file as well as www.editlife.net's re done, CS:S .fgd file as well (two .fgds = bad???) And um, also in options what should be the default texture file and materials folder used???

Thanks

1) No idea, I won't say anythign to try and sound smart either...

2) Depending on the prop, it has to be a prop_static, prop_physics, or
occasionally a prop_physics_multiplayer. You sort of have to play
around with them to see which type the prop is build for. You can
use judgement on this one as well, a table, would be a prop_physics
because you want it to fly around and break, where as a fence would be
a prop_static because it's not going anywhere.

3) Unless you're using custom textures and props, you shouldn't need
to. The other players who get your map will also have the
standard textures for the game. If you're using custom textures,
check out the tutorials or one of the many threads addressing the issue.

Go nuts, welcome to the pit.

1) for the blended areas to show up, you'll need to run rad, too. Fast'll do, though.

2) As French Toast said... and perhaps you have set the visible distances to different than default?

3) No.

so kind of weird on a note, i run a full RAD on a simple hollowed out cube map, with an alpha painted floor - and STILL get NOTHING! the RAD runs without errors (why the hell would there ever be an error in a stupid cube) sooooooooo, what the..............!?

Do you have a light source? Rad won't work properly if theres no light at all.

Displacements dont seal leaks, so youll probably have to put a brush underneath your alpha surface covered with nodraw.

so maybe im just retarded, but if i seal the level in with sky, and THEN put a 3d skybox in will the players even see the geometry in the skybox? (hills, mountains, rocks, buildings etc...) or are they just going to see the sealed off sky?
