Using the arc tool. Draw a box that is 256x256, with a height (height
of stairs) of 8 units (8 units is generally good for HL2 stairs). Hit
enter. You will get a a window asking to input some info:

Wall Width: 64 - 96 (you decide)

Number of sides: anything above 16

Arc: 360 (press circle button)

Startangle: Doesn't matter

Add height: 8 (or however high you decide you want your stairs to be)

Press OK

Then you can just clone drag the stairs over and over again.

Some more reading material for your spiral stair case.

Also keep it limited to one problem per topic, so create another topic for your water question....aftering performing a search first.

Sadly, a simple staircase is easy enough to make that not being able to figure out how might jeopardize your chances of making a decent map.

Its not a guarantee but sorting out simple constructs is a problem solving skill that mappers must possess to make anything worth releasing.

Next time I'd consider posting your failed attempts and asking how to improve them. Asking straight out how to build a simple staircase shows a lack of initiative on your part.

Good luck and, if the answer is satisfactory, mark it blue.

The best things in life, aren't things.

I built a set of winding stone stairs that would go well in a castle, but they are a fixed length since they are dynamic. They start out as a flat surface and then open up like in the castle scene in the 3rd raiders film. I zipped up some photos for a friend to see a few days ago. Its a large file though (3.7 meg):

www.astutesolutions.net/images/map/cabin10g0027.zip

If you are thinking about doing something like this, I can show you how I did it or send you that piece as a prefab.

I realize people get upset for linking to large files (I read the tutorial) but I'm not soliciting opinions on this, rather offering ideas. Also, I don't have a jpeg compression tool here at the office.
