Hey guys,

I need you guys to do me a small favour. I need to get the average file size of a map BEFORE compiling with all the materials.

So pretty much, just zip up the map and all the vmt and vtf that the map requires and tell me how big it is.

Thanks!

Errr, for why? Surely if you were wanting to know the average size of source maps, you would want it post compile anyway? Also, are you just wanting the size with necessary custom materials (ie. what you would distribute with the level) included, or ALL resources used?

For the Remote Compile System,I'm trying to get the wheels rolling on that again and I think I'm going to have to ask my host to up the upload size because I suspect the filesizes are much bigger.

Well I would like to say all the necessary material but I know some idiots going to include all of them. Lets just start off with the necessary ones just so I have a basic idea.

A nice sized map with a few entities and no custom materials or models is about a 5-8 megabyte BSP.

A map Custom stuff depends on how much you put in.

Thanks, but i need the file sizes BEFORE the compile, not the bsp filesize. The vmf, vmt and vtf combined in a zip.

its not really a reasonable question sir...so many variables, and so, so relative to what you are after as far as design goes, that its hard to quantify....there is no average persay, as, a killbox will obviously be smaller than a regular map built for 20 players.. (at least it SHOULD be.. :heee: ) but ya never know...ive built vmfs over 15 megs before, and as small as 5, with nary a killbox in sight...

Custom resources are potentially so varied too - some maps solely custom materials and props, while others are entirely standard. Displacement surface heavy maps also get a huge bump in file size.

This begs to be asked, since I never considered it before.

I always assumed that the BSP got bigger after compiled with custom textures. I never assumed the rmf or map got bigger because of them. Its afterall, only the impression of a finished product, not the real map.

Does a .map or .rmf get larger as we add custom stuff too?

No, but the files required to compile the map do. You need the custom textures to be able to compile a map that uses them.

If you include custom resources, map size can effectively spiral out to infinity.

No it doesn't - it's still just referencing files whether they are standard or custom so there is no difference as far as it is concerned. My point was more about some people using loads of custom content therefore needing to upload that custom content for the remote compiler to make use of. The compilers need data about materials and models so if you are going to upload the map to be compiled, then those need to go to.

I understood that customs need used eventually. I was just curious as to their initial effect on the sizes of the rmf or map.

Funny, after all these years, its something I overlooked.

I know there are tons of variables, thats why I'm asking you guys if you could do this to any map of yours so I can gather a range and see which setting would fit for most people. My host won't allow 100mb uploads, otherwise I would set it to that. I have to make a choice on what to set it at and I would like to have the limit just past what the range most maps are.

1st off, I don't blame the host. 100 megs is bulls**t.

2nd, there is no reason why people cannot upload 100 megs (if they were crazy enough to make a map that required it) in chunks... IE, textures, prefabs, models, etc, etc.

Seriously, anything that it takes to make any map could be broken down in to manageable pieces.

Yes I suppose I could find a way to upload in chunks, if it really came down to it. I was just trying to see if there was an eaiser way then coding it to upload in 6mb chunks.

I was just asking what I thought was a reasonable question :X

oh my goodness just tell him. fuzbeam's vmf is about 6 megs. subway's is 3 and dm_basts is about 4.5. no custom content for any of them.
