So what do you guys think about this.

Will scientists f**k over our planet?

Will we have Aliens walk around shooting lasers?

Do you have a crowbar?

Or is all this some silly joke, if not, it seems pretty cool, not that
i know a lot about black holes and stuff, but real life portals, yay.

On a side note: if portals and teleports become a reality, will
humanity die because they're so fat, since they won't have to move to
get to another place?

Its a real particle accelerator being built, and I believe it will be the longest in the world when finished. It is also made to smash stuff together at very high speeds, so the article sounds true.

This made me laugh: "They estimate the possibility of accidentally destroying the planet as extremely low."

Don't be ridiculous. This is not a joke, and there will be no "portals". When real scientists talk about extra dimensions, they are NOT describing other worlds you could enter. It's simply more degrees of freedom to describe the universe. Think of it this way:if you have a picture painted in black and white, you are looking at a three-dimensional object. The artist has three things he can combine to paint the picture, two spatial dimensions, and one "color dimension". On the other hand, a color picture has five dimensions, two spatial, and three color (RGB)... Extra dimensions in our universe will be analogous to this. Right now we have three spatial dimensions and one time dimension. Any new ones that are discovered will likely be as radicaly different from space and time as time and space are from eachother!

Indeed, parallel universes and dimensions are completely different concepts. Unfortunatly the media has done an excellent job of mangling the two.

Additional dimensions just boggles my brain.

I hope their risk estimation is right...

I wonder if we can even understand additional dimensions. Maybe they work on paper... as pure math. But it's weird to think of dimensions our brain simply cannot put in a model because we can only think in 3 (or 4). I, btw., do not think the fourth dimension is time. It's movement.

Movement is non-orthogonal, and therefore cannot be a dimension. That is the test you must apply. The specification of a point in time is completely independent of space, and likewise, you don't need to know what time it is to know where you are. In contrast, movement cannot be specified without reference to both time and space. Movement, is the time evolution of space.

But...

oups... nevermind.

Ah, well let me use the opportunity to discuss this anyway.
Maybe movement is not what I mean. But speed. Isn't a clock just used comparing the speed of the earth with that of the hand? If it's speed and not time that is the elementary force that would explain why time travel seems so incredibly unlikely.

(yea I've watched a lot of "back to the future")

That's Tracer Bullet... He has eight slugs in him, one's lead and the rest are bourbon. The drink packs a punch, and he packs a revolver... He's a PhD.

The media is awesome at misconstruing a story because they have no idea wtf they are talking about.

For all you know I could be going for a doctorate in political science, or basket weaving, or something else equally useless. This isn't the case, as it happens, but you shouldn't jump to conclusions.

So how's tyhe basket weaving coming along?

Anyway, I personally look forward to the earth being crushed into a singularity. But there's an unsettlingly high chance that that won't happen.
