Magnificent cliff-work, sir, and spiffy homemade textures too  It looks a bit like UT2003 terrain, which is a massive achievement in the HL engine (especially with R's like that).

Well done for quietly plugging away at mapping until you were ready to release something special. I look forward to seeing the final version.

You decided on how you are going to encase the level? Obviously you aren't gonna leave the edges as skyboxes but I'm curious as to how you are gonna go about it.

Cass, your textures look great. But ... (and this is for Brasso ...) do you really think it is so hard to extract those textures from a JPG, even when they are covered with text ?

I had to work on it for 20 minutes with MSpaint (!!!) and I had them, more or less intact.

Of course, I'm not th?t evil, and I really respect your work, so I will put some anti-rip-text over my "proof" too.Gl with your map, I'm looking forward to it.

My 'texture protection system' that I have goes much deeper than that - certain pixels in every texture I had in that image were a certain color 'proportional' to the coloring of the whole image, so it's easy to tell when somebody's taken my work. It's quite ingenius, I can assure you

And you will also recognize that it's quite impossible to get anything near the quality of the originals when you do that (more or less intact, HUMBUG, you just copied different sections of the image over). I would more than easily be able to prove that someone had ripped me off.

Lastly, the text was just there for the hell of it. A lot of maps have taken or edited my textures - if it looks good, I just say hell with it, if it doesn't, I ask them to remove it. Fairly simple.

If you're really paranoid about these things, I believe it is possible to encode images with digital watermarks. I'm not sure how they work though.

Hey guys, I wasn't looking for trouble or anything.

Just bored & willing to test my paint skills

I thought it looked good from a distance, but I noticed how hard it is to get that upper-left rock done. Really amazing how you put that together cass ... I guess we're all expecting a tutorial for that.

P.S: About that watermark: http://www.canon.com/technology/detail/software/digital_watermark/ --> quite interesting.

Yes, I am rather proud of these ones. Not a single one is composed out of one photo - in fact, the rock is closer to having been a mix of fifteen different textures, but I'd say I got a fairly nice result.

Looking very nice, Cass. maybe add some rocks jutting out of the terrain to give it a wilder atmosphere and some cool shadows

Now now Gollum, let the man enjoy his new fangled card. It'll be obselete by next week.

Speaking of which I might consider getting one, hevent really spent any money on my computer other than an optical mouse (which I loathe for its trackball).

Boo on you, son. Just because I can't make my game look like it was drawn with graphite doesn't make me any less special.

I posted a reply to my thread in the TS Mapping Contest forums, for all those of you interested in learning the status of the map. www.specialistsmod.net

An optical trackball does exist. It's just the same as a normal trackball, only instead of little wheels that touch the ball detecting movements of it, an optical sensor like the one on an optical mouse looks at the textured ball.

I'd like to see a combination of the orginial and the new shots. I really liked the lighting in the orginial shots, that sky was much nicer and it had a better feel to it but i also like the idea of these buildings around it and i think they could owrk out really well when you finish them. shrug Looks good though.

Really nice work Cassius, although I have to agree with Mr.Ben. The old sky and lighting was much better.

Keep it up

Didn't know that people would so much prefer the de_dust sky over dod_stuka, but whatever

I changed the lighting by accident - it's actually the same light_environment as in the second shot, but I accidently put the bounce to some astronomical number and bam, it turns orange. Such bizzarre lighting errors have happened every step of the way in this map - RAD really, really hates my terrain. However, when I put in the DoD trees and the Stuka sky, it looked oddly like a sunrise in Utah I once witnessed.

To my eyes, both the lighting styles have their distinct benefits. The dawn light compliments the buildings but hurts the terrain, and the daylight hates the buildings but really sexors my terrain. If I can't get a good balance between the two, the map will be daylight.
