You do not need Steam to play HL. At least not yet anyway. It's best to stick with the Half-Life you bought, as Steam is still very buggy for a lot of users, and is also very demanding on computer resources, more so than Half-Life. Steam will become mandatory once Valve have deemed it bug-free.

Heh, you mean being able to sell games over it, not actually charge for Steam itself

Well get a monthly payment connection if you want to play internet games, it will save you lots of money. And it's a 56k modem I believe.

Not necessarily, I've played HL online for years on a 56k, loads of people do.

Uhm you probaly won't lag on a local server, but if it's "pay as you go" I recommend not playing Half-Life at all. Save some money and get a better internet provider/subscription.
Because if you don't you will soon be thousands and thousands of dollars in det.

It's all a matter of the right config and the healthy computer ...
Sometimes, my ISP puts me on "smallband" for a couple of days. (that's when I download over 10 GB in 30 days, it's some kind of ... punishment). I just use another config to play online games in that period. (rates low, cmdrate, updaterate, etc ...). Works not perfect, but it gets the job done.
