Well, I am just about finished with my upgrade. I went with the core2quad Q9550 for my CPU, mainly because the Q9450 was out of stock and no longer being manufactured. My question now is, which operating system would be a wiser choice?. I truly appreciated the input you all gave me on the original upgrade thread, and I am looking for more of the same.
I installed Vista Ultimate(32 bit) on my wifes machine, and I see how functional it has become since its original release. I now have an oppurtunity to upgrade(Thank you Santa!), but as of this morning my Zune 30GB player bricked, as did all of them worldwide!See story here.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/12/31/zune.player.failures/index.html

So I have kind of a mixed thread here. Do I wait for windows 7 in 2009 and get me a shiny new Zune 120GB player?. Or do I wait for a Zune 30GB fix?.

(which, btw, will most surely be a "mail-in" type of fix as the players are completely frozen and will not be patchable on-line)-

-and get Vista Ultimate for now?.And either way, should I go with 32, or 64 bit install? and why?
You tech savvy youths are always filled with valid opinions, which I value.

I hope this thread is'nt too confusing.

UPDATE:

Apparently, the giants at Microsoft, did not take into account Leap Year when programming the 2006 Zune 30GB software bundle.

Many surmise that this may be a stall from the Zune techs. Story and answers Here:

Anywho, my question still stands. Should I get Vista Ultimate now or wait for Windows 2007 next year?.

Besides all that drama, I would like to wish all the Pitters a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Party On in 2009!!!!!!

So the question is should you stick to Windows XP and wait for Windows 7 or buy Vista Ultimate now?

I'd probably stick with Windows XP, there isn't much point of getting Vista unless you want Dirextx10 now. I must also mention that I believe Vista handles 2 cores better than XP, not sure about 4 though.

I should probably reply later, but I'm currently waiting for my parts to come in...

I ordered Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition and an AMD quad core (true quad core) processor. I had the option to wait for windows 7, but I have a feeling there will be an upgrade option for Vista owners. I know for a fact that Vista Ultimate 64 bit has 99% compatibility with most games and programs out there. -This is mainly because of it's 32 bit emulator. But for drivers of course, you have to have the 64 bit version of those. The other reason I went with the 64 version is because I'll be having 8 GB of RAM, and 32 bit editions max out on 4 GB, so this was necessary. Plus, Things just run faster in 64 bit edition. The only down side I've read is the 1% of programs (16 bit programs won't run at all) that may not work. BTW, all Valve games work (and mods).

I would go with Vista because it is actually more sustainable in the 64 bit version than it's XP counterpart. -Meaning, more programs will work on Vista 64 than they will with XP 64. Also, They will stop selling new copies of XP in February (I think) and support will end for it in January 2010.

But I can get back to you guys when I do get my new desktop up and running and actually give you my experienced answer.

I want to get Vista 64 bit.. I have been holding off because for a while there drivers were a major issue. I have had a 64 bit dual core for some time now.. and been stuck in 32 bit windows VP.

I got my son Halo2 for the PC and it wont run on my machine, but on his new laptop with vista it runs great.. read the box and found out it requires Vista. So I see that being the new standard. I would go with Vista over the Zune.

There is no reason for the 32bit version of Vista to exist. If you want to go with Vista, get 64bit or nothing.

Windows7 will be out this autumn, but whether you want to wait or not is down to you. Functionally there is nothing XP cannot do - RAM handicaps aside, although that makes zero difference for anything you'll be doing (if you were using anything that could remotely benefit from more than 2GB of RAM then you'd know about it and wouldn't be asking).

So flip a coin, it really doesn't matter one way or the other.

That Zune story is hilarious and a good reason to stay away from it.

Personally, I would stick with XP. There are two reasons to go with Vista 64 that aren't canceled out by the negatives: Ridiculous amounts of RAM and a handful of shiny DX10 effects. If I bought Vista, it wouldn't be because of a convincing feature list, it would be because it's the only option available for a bunch of high-end hardware uses. That doesn't feel right.

But my view of Microsoft products might be biased, no matter how good (rather "not-bad") they are. Follow your heart, Scarlett!

PS: Those smiley macros are pretty aggressive.

Im going with Larchy, flip a coin. Windows 7 is really just Vista with some changes that make vista much better (like the ribbon interface). But windows 7 could take a while to be released.
