Saw a friend using virtual desktops on Linux, and discovered you can do it with XP:

There's a great alt-tabbing replacement program there too, and a spinkee graph drawing calculator

Tweak XP is cool. If you want a different virtual desktop try WinVNC, it's a neat program that runs on the system tray. It basically lets someone across the network control your mouse and keyboard inputs. There's a Java app to access remotely too, I think.

Be wary however that nobody gets on your computer you don't trust, because the passwords stored in the registry are very poorly encoded - which means remote control on your computer if you're not careful.

EDIT: Oh, by virtual desktop you meant multiple desktops. I thought you meant REMOTE desktop.

Ask for help at your local hardware store, be sure wear all appropriate protective clothing, make sure children do not operate them. I believe in the UK Black and Decker have a wide variety of tools available in all good hardware stores.
