Post comments, feedback, ideas, suggestions anything.

Btw, the floating announcement speaker was left by accident just to clear that up.

I think it looks like a good start from the screenshots, but a bit
empty here and there. Could use some more detail spread around. Some
textures look a bit repetetive too and those lamps are a bit too much
for such a small road. The lighting looks good though, quite calm.

Use some displacements for the terrain inside the compound, it looks too flat now.

Any idea on what sort of military camp it will be? Training camp or an
outpost or a vehicle bay? Might be nice to give the map a more distinct
touch than just letting it be a generic military base.

i think it looks good and that you captured the theme well. as for being "rough", maybe extend the use of shadows. with a sun that low there would be far more and longer shadows. let those lantern-poles cast shadows, that would look good imo.

I think this map looks promising.

I have some issues, however, with the consistency of theme. It seems to me, from looking at the screenshots, that there is a certain clash of themes here, which makes the map feel akward. I've never actually been in a military base, but I would imagine that they would seem less 'civilian' than your map. I don't know if that makes sense. I imagine a military base in the desert would feel much larger, and possibly more covert. I would picture some large hangars, housing vehicles and planes, underground concrete bunkers, landing strips, helicopter landing points...etc. There's just not much here that screams 'military base' to me. Now I don't know what size map you are intending to build - it looks medium to smallish. If that is the case, you could potentially build lots of cool 'unreachable' geometry in the skybox, that supports the theme and makes the base feel much larger and more functional.

As far as the basic architecture - some of the buildings feel 'unnatural'. The second story buildings feel too narrow and odd - the white window texture just doesn't feel right, and makes the scale feel strange.

Those lamps also feel strange and very non-military.

This is what I would do if I were you. I would take the basic layout you have now, dig up as many reference pictures as you can from google images.

http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=military+buildings

Then, using references, pour on the details to really sell the military theme.. A makeover, plus some nice lighting, plus a good skybox could kick this map up 10 notches on the 'cool meter'.

Also, I know this is for an unreleased mod, but a download would really help the critique process.

Good luck.

I only have 2 comments ATM, one about the map and one not. If either have been mentioned yet, please disregard my post.

1) You have plenty of elevation variance in the top but almost none on the bottom. Try a bit of displacement on the dirt/lawns.

2)

<TD class=abouttext>Nice, looking very good. P.S. the screenshots size are fine in my opinion. Maybe Fjorn should learn to put his resolution to 1280x1024 like normal people</TD></TR></TABLE>

@Win98, you are the least "normal" person around here. From anyone else this comment might have rang true.

I still run 1024x768. I am considered in most social circles to be about normal. I am not going to say that I talk about my weight or hair color as much as some do but in most aspects I am normal enough.

I like what I am seeing in the screens. I like especially that they are small enough that I can see them.

Thanks a bunch Nih.

New screenshots and namechange! I guess you could say this is mostly an administrative military base, since that's what it looks like.

Please tell me what you think of the skybox, since I only have 3 textures to make use of and I'm not sure if I'll keep it.

I don't really like the lighting in the red brick building, and I'd
like some suggestions on how to make it look better. Right now I'm just
using a prop with a light entity underneath it, and it doesn't quite
look natural to me :/

The shine on some of my props is weird, I suppose this is because I didn't use cubemaps properly?
